5/16" hex like the end of the inter shaft. Got an old one-grind the teeth off & use a screwdriver bit

Find a pump drive shaft from a Ford, they're 5/16" hex for the entire length.

STILL waiting to have some steel and aluminum 5/16 hex stock PLASTIC COATED in the middle ...to prevent damage to the intermediate-shaft-bushing during usage. They should be available in a month or so ... the cost should be just slightly more than a plain-jane hex rod.
Word!
I turned my shaft so it was round in the area of contact. Don't want to end up with brass shavings in the motor and a damaged bushing.

Do both ends have square drives? Or is one end shaped like the end of a distributor to fit the slot in the gear? Pic of both ends would be greatly appreciated.
the gear has to come out

I actually found one when rebuilding a friends 340-6. This is what I found after driving it to my place and pulling the intake I took a picture of it as found, before taking it out.
