Greg I've worked on a lot of E bodys and changed a lot of dash pads.
You can save yourself a LOT of cursing, a LOT of skinned knuckles if you just remove the dash assembly as a whole. Take it in the workshop and change the pad on the bench.
In order to get at the 12 nuts holding the pad on, you'll have to dismantle most of the dash anyways...
Trust me, you can remove the assembly in under 20 mins.

alan, cant do it that way. pad has got to go out for months and im not taking whole thong in/out 4 times and keeping it drivable within the hour. a picture of the nut locations would be great, Ill get my niece with tiny hands and some flex joints to squeeze in.

Ok...Start by removing the glove box liner...the ash tray holder, the light bar, the instruments. You'll find three along the forward edge above the glove box, three behind the light bar and four along the back edge by the windshield and two more hiding somewhere I can't remember right now...

That one is always tough with the dash sitting in your lap...

My advice is to buy a core on ebag or craigslist or on Moparts. Send it to be rebuilt. Then take the dash all apart when the new one shows up. It solves several problems. 1 Your VIN tag is not detatched from the your car for a long period of time. 2 Stuff gets lost when it is apart for sometime no matter how well you try to keep track of it. 3 Remembering how to put it back together and how the harness wires are routed, etc is easier. (Especially for guys like me with CRS) When you are done, sell the core to another guy so he can do the same. It worked well for me except I still have a core and have not had time to sell it Craig

just the pad..3/8 swivel socket in a 1/4 drive works wonders...1 screw on each side of the dash pad,1 on the right of the radio, remove left lower dash panel, lower steering column, remove left dash panel assy and unplug, remove light panel above cluster ,remove center bezel, remove cluster and let it hang, remove glove box door and compartment box, remove ash tray and ash tray housing that has the cigar lighter...remove 10 pal nuts holding pad to metal frame..remove both pillar panels...lift up and away...tough part..touching the vin plate....grinded the rivet off on the back, used a punch to punch the rosette rivets out, replaced with nos ones..made sure to clock them like the old ones so they look like they were not removed...tough part now over...time for detailing, upgrading speakers and so on...hope this helps you folks...
