Whats it cost now days for a good paint job for a race car. I want a good job, not a $500 50 foot'r.
Im hoping it will cost in the $3000-$3500 range. The car needs no body panel's replaced, no trim to tape up, no windows, no interior, no grill nothing to tape up etc. The car has Primer but its a Lacquer red oxide primer that has been on the car for 15+ years. Its actually held up pretty good. The primer is thin in some areas, and there is light surface rust. The car IMO would need completely sanded down to remove all old primer, and shot back with a Urethane type (maybe high build 2k) It is going to be a simple one color coat. I plan to put some lettering under the clear coat. Etc. It has a few dents, were a ladder fell into it and had some small bubbling in one place but has already been fixed (roughed in).
I suck at body work, and no one n the family paints... So I will include a few pic's...
If I can get this car painted for under $4k i will be a happy camper.
Now this isnt going to be a show car, although I want it too look slick. It is a racer.
I have only had the car for 6 months nad have been a busy camper. I have the engine. All new 572 Hemi with CNC ported heads, have the induction, fuel pump regulator, carbs, all engine parts, electronics, trans, converter, the rearend is all complete narrowed Dana 60 with cal tracks. MSD7AL box for ignition all hidden.
I wanted to really go with the Nostalgia look in this car. I have a Accel duel point dist, i converted to electronic which has a cable drive tach, Moroso 5" cable drive Monster tach the tattle tail recall. Hurst Lightning Rod shifter etc. The interior and cage is finished, and I have some A100 van seats. Etc.

Shifter
Thanks to RVOYLES, and RyanJ for the idea of this shifter..
I picked up lots and lots of parts from the guys right off this web site. Converter, rear end componets, all of my engine parts. There isnt very many board members if any at all I haven't picked up parts through.

Dana of coarse

good luck with finding somebody to do it for that. it will cost almost that much for material.

Paint is pretty location specific. The last job I had done on my Challenger cost me north of 10 grand.(Southern California) This was block sand and paint only-no body work. I'm pretty sure there are places that will do it for less than this. High quality paint(materials) is expensive. I actually bought the paint for the Challenger trying to save some money and I spent about 3000 dollars on the primer and top coating.

Really wow.
I do live In Ky, and Im 100% sure labor rates would be rock bottom compared to other parts of the country.
I didn't know material was that expensive. There is lots of small one man shops in my area that paint/rebuilds. I actually have had one quote on labor it was $1600. Im pretty sure he said he use's DuPont Nason, or Mason line (sp)..
Like I say I have no idea what paint materials would cost, or how much it would need.
I actually thought I could get the material for $2k or so, then the $1600 labor....

well I know things have gone up some but I had my car shot with primer/sealer and base/clear 6 years ago and don't have $500.00 total in it. It wasn't painted in someones garage either. But it was moonlighted.

blasting all the rust and primer, fix suspect areas, full high build primer, one blocking, primer sealer, and a full one color paint (did you want the cage, interior and underside a different color?) is going to chew through your current budget.
Add lettering and clear coat plus buff, and you will be way over.

Roll cages are a pain to shoot, and the floor in and out will add too. I'd suggest a light color for those, so it stays cool and it is easy to spot leaks underneath.
The outside will not be straight with one blocking session, unless the guy is a master. Count on at least 2-3 prime + guide and full blocking to get it looking nice. Again, a light color is more forgiving to surface issues than a dark color. It will show gaps more.

depends on the quality of the paint. the good stuff is real expensive.

Like I said I did not get the top of the line I just got some decent basic paint nothing special and it cost me over 500 just for material.

Jeez it is a race car, not a show car. Spend the $$$ where it will do some good. I feel I have a decent paint job and the car runs consistant low 11's and don't have alot in just paint. In fact I don't have in the whole car what some consider low buck paint jobs.

Had our 71 Dart painted back in March 09, someone told me that the prison in Indian Springs, about 30 miles north of vegas had a full restoration shop in it...called and got a quote over the phone..had my daughter pick out paint color at local parts store they used as a supplier...

the guy quoted 1500 over the phone for labor, actual cost was 1700 due to have bare metal showing...and paint was 300 a gallon plus primer for a total of 700 ... total cost was 2400.

i removed all the chrome,,,grill..tail lights..side markers.

bumpers were fiberglass was painted to match car, and hood and trunk lid is fiberglass.

they shot 5 coats of color and 3 coats of clear plus color sand and buffed the car.

the prison has 2 commerical paint booth...

you might want to see if something like that is available...

here is a picture of the car load to the prison...and finished photo..

If you could do every thing in 100 hrs I think you would be doing good.
People tend to not work for 5 bucks an hour either..

I paid 2500.00 for the labor and 500.00 in materials...had the rear patch panels put on..and a 8x8 spot behind both front tires cut out soft and rusty spots and replaced with fresh metal..had the supports behind the front fenders completely rebuilt, sanded down to bare metal and then blocked..Even had the A-pillar fixed where Hurricanne RITA blew down my shop on her..smashed the windsheild and caved in the top of one fender..it was at his place almost 4 months..but was worth the wait and looks good..it will be finally buffed out in a week or two ,right before it hits the track.. here are some of the pics.. before and after..
