Paint job for a race car? (UPDATE)

Paint job for a race car? (UPDATE) - 07/29/09 10:19 PM

Whats it cost now days for a good paint job for a race car. I want a good job, not a $500 50 foot'r.
Im hoping it will cost in the $3000-$3500 range. The car needs no body panel's replaced, no trim to tape up, no windows, no interior, no grill nothing to tape up etc. The car has Primer but its a Lacquer red oxide primer that has been on the car for 15+ years. Its actually held up pretty good. The primer is thin in some areas, and there is light surface rust. The car IMO would need completely sanded down to remove all old primer, and shot back with a Urethane type (maybe high build 2k) It is going to be a simple one color coat. I plan to put some lettering under the clear coat. Etc. It has a few dents, were a ladder fell into it and had some small bubbling in one place but has already been fixed (roughed in).
I suck at body work, and no one n the family paints... So I will include a few pic's...
If I can get this car painted for under $4k i will be a happy camper.
Now this isnt going to be a show car, although I want it too look slick. It is a racer.
I have only had the car for 6 months nad have been a busy camper. I have the engine. All new 572 Hemi with CNC ported heads, have the induction, fuel pump regulator, carbs, all engine parts, electronics, trans, converter, the rearend is all complete narrowed Dana 60 with cal tracks. MSD7AL box for ignition all hidden.
I wanted to really go with the Nostalgia look in this car. I have a Accel duel point dist, i converted to electronic which has a cable drive tach, Moroso 5" cable drive Monster tach the tattle tail recall. Hurst Lightning Rod shifter etc. The interior and cage is finished, and I have some A100 van seats. Etc.

Shifter
Thanks to RVOYLES, and RyanJ for the idea of this shifter..
I picked up lots and lots of parts from the guys right off this web site. Converter, rear end componets, all of my engine parts. There isnt very many board members if any at all I haven't picked up parts through.

good luck with finding somebody to do it for that. it will cost almost that much for material.

Re: Paint job for a race car? - 07/29/09 10:37 PM

Paint is pretty location specific. The last job I had done on my Challenger cost me north of 10 grand.(Southern California) This was block sand and paint only-no body work. I'm pretty sure there are places that will do it for less than this. High quality paint(materials) is expensive. I actually bought the paint for the Challenger trying to save some money and I spent about 3000 dollars on the primer and top coating.

Re: Paint job for a race car? - 07/29/09 10:46 PM

Really wow.
I do live In Ky, and Im 100% sure labor rates would be rock bottom compared to other parts of the country.
I didn't know material was that expensive. There is lots of small one man shops in my area that paint/rebuilds. I actually have had one quote on labor it was $1600. Im pretty sure he said he use's DuPont Nason, or Mason line (sp)..
Like I say I have no idea what paint materials would cost, or how much it would need.
I actually thought I could get the material for $2k or so, then the $1600 labor....

well I know things have gone up some but I had my car shot with primer/sealer and base/clear 6 years ago and don't have $500.00 total in it. It wasn't painted in someones garage either. But it was moonlighted.

well we painted mine 2 years ago I got all the supplies at shop price and I have over 500.00 just in paint/primer/clear coat and hardener and I didn't get the top of the line paint either.

Re: Paint job for a race car? - 07/29/09 11:20 PM

blasting all the rust and primer, fix suspect areas, full high build primer, one blocking, primer sealer, and a full one color paint (did you want the cage, interior and underside a different color?) is going to chew through your current budget.
Add lettering and clear coat plus buff, and you will be way over.

Roll cages are a pain to shoot, and the floor in and out will add too. I'd suggest a light color for those, so it stays cool and it is easy to spot leaks underneath.
The outside will not be straight with one blocking session, unless the guy is a master. Count on at least 2-3 prime + guide and full blocking to get it looking nice. Again, a light color is more forgiving to surface issues than a dark color. It will show gaps more.

Like I said I did not get the top of the line I just got some decent basic paint nothing special and it cost me over 500 just for material.

Jeez it is a race car, not a show car. Spend the $$$ where it will do some good. I feel I have a decent paint job and the car runs consistant low 11's and don't have alot in just paint. In fact I don't have in the whole car what some consider low buck paint jobs.

Re: Paint job for a race car? - 07/29/09 11:36 PM

Had our 71 Dart painted back in March 09, someone told me that the prison in Indian Springs, about 30 miles north of vegas had a full restoration shop in it...called and got a quote over the phone..had my daughter pick out paint color at local parts store they used as a supplier...

the guy quoted 1500 over the phone for labor, actual cost was 1700 due to have bare metal showing...and paint was 300 a gallon plus primer for a total of 700 ... total cost was 2400.

i removed all the chrome,,,grill..tail lights..side markers.

bumpers were fiberglass was painted to match car, and hood and trunk lid is fiberglass.

they shot 5 coats of color and 3 coats of clear plus color sand and buffed the car.

the prison has 2 commerical paint booth...

you might want to see if something like that is available...

here is a picture of the car load to the prison...and finished photo..

I paid 2500.00 for the labor and 500.00 in materials...had the rear patch panels put on..and a 8x8 spot behind both front tires cut out soft and rusty spots and replaced with fresh metal..had the supports behind the front fenders completely rebuilt, sanded down to bare metal and then blocked..Even had the A-pillar fixed where Hurricanne RITA blew down my shop on her..smashed the windsheild and caved in the top of one fender..it was at his place almost 4 months..but was worth the wait and looks good..it will be finally buffed out in a week or two ,right before it hits the track.. here are some of the pics.. before and after..

I wouldn't be ashamed of the paint on my car at any track. It shines, it isn't blistering or have runs or dirt in it. Oh and by the way it may be a plane jane color combo but have had a lot of + comments on it.

dont laugh but there is a local Maaco paint shop that will paint the car for $700.00 and it comes out real nice. i gave the painter an extra $150.00 on the side to give me extra coats, i took off all the trim and bumpers, no real body work, came out fantastic, 8 years later it looks very good but now needs another repaint due to rocks, nicks, etc.

I hate to break the news to you, but you're not going to be a happy camper. Forget that price range you quoted. I highly doubt you'll find a decent shop that will do it for that money or less, except someplace like Maaco. I did my last paint job myself, and materials alone ended up cost me $3,000. It can be done, if YOU do the job yourself. If you have access to a reasonably clean garage and a 60 gallon air compressor, its a good time to learn how to do bodywork and paint. If you have patience, a desire to learn and aren't afraid of a challenge, then I encourage you to do it. Your car is a good candidate for a beginner, because its stripped, it doesn't need major bodywork, and you're not looking for a perfect show car paint job.

that duster is beautiful for sure but 3000 for materials alone is a little on the high end not sure if you got it at dealer cost or not but I can get very high end paint for 1/2-2/3 that price unless you start talking HOK camilian paint that changes colors.

Maaco is a great deal as long as you get a good spray tech....pay a visit and see what kind of work there putting out....that's where the new truck build will get painted, should be less than a grand even for base coat / clear coat...

Well from my experience you get what you pay for when it comes to paint and bodywork. Some guys just work cheap thats all. Folks new to the business may be willing to work for less. When it comes to paint and bodywork there is no money in repaints of old cars or race cars. IF they are in business to make money they do collision repair work. That is where the cash is at. Look around and you may find someone willing to take on that type of project but do your homework...I have painted most all of my cars over the years, the current one being an exception, you dont want to know what it would cost to duplicate

Re: Paint job for a race car? - 07/30/09 05:28 AM

When Kenny Youngblood did mine back in 2005 it cost me more than twice that, and this was a good guy price.
If I choose to just fix my front clip and match what Kenny already did, it will probably cost me that $3000-$3500..

But... If any of you have seen my paint up close..(before the wreck) you will probably see why it was so expensive.

I have about $1100 in materials in mine and painted the car in my garage. It was the first car I ever painted myself. learned alot along the way but it was fun and came out decent. If you have a area to spray the car, why not try it.

It takes more than just sprayable material to do bodywork and a paint job. I spent $300.00 on sandpaper alone. Add in a DeVilbiss spray gun, a variety of Dura-Block sanding blocks, Rage plastic filler, a good DA sander, a good buffer, buffer pads, compound and finishing polish, a detail gun, rolls of masking paper, measuring cups, etc. All that stuff is necessary, and not insignificant, cost-wise. It adds up quickly.

Bob Coomer, watch this video, maybe it will motivate you to take on the job yourself.
Its a big file, give it time to load. My paint technique sucked, but the cut and buff removes all sins.

Re: Paint job for a race car? - 07/30/09 01:10 PM

It doesn't take that much time to paint the car. The key to a QUALITY paint job is in the prep work before the paint is applied and the color sanding, buffing, etc. after the paint is laid on. As others have said...you get what you paid for. "If you don't have time to do it right the first time where will you find the time to do it right the second time"?

I guess mine will have between $1000 and $1500 into it including the paint guns (Finishline) and materials. This is also my first attempt and I think it is going well so far. Mounting all of the fiberglass parts should be a challenge. I wish I had more time to play with it.

One other thought, at some point in time you will more than likely will want to sell your car. It's easier to sell a car with a great looking paint job than one that was done at Earl Sheib's. The money you save now might cost you more money in the future.

Re: Paint job for a race car? - 07/30/09 01:40 PM

We do it on the side to support are racing habit 25 per hr per man cash.materials cost can range depending on what you use.If you watch what you buy and DO NOT WASTE you can get buy for 1500-2000.
zinc-chomate primer225.00
mud 50.00
180 paper role 35.00
180 board file 45.00
80 board file 45.00
36 board file 45.00
320 board file 45.00
400 dyno interface 65.00
blocking primer 200.00
tape 50.00
paper 50.00
paint(ps2 silver) 350.00 dupont chroma base
base maker 120.00
12305 base hardner 95.00
nason sealer 100.00 setup
nason clear w/hardn 225.00
tac cloth 20.00
cleane up thinner 39.00
pre cleaner 40.00
scotch bright 25.00

these are the cheapest materials you can use and still have a nice paint job.It all depends on how you want it done, would we need to do the bottom side? does the sheet metal fit? any welding? on a scale of 1-10 how strait is the body (dents)? are you willing to sand the body and get it ready for epoxy prime (starting prime)? do you pay cash? do you want it wet sanded and buffed? All these play a part in the final bill.We have painted a number of race cars from 3500.00 to 7000.00, 150 hrs cost 3750.00 plus materials you pay for body materials up front and paint and clear when it is ready to spray. We bill every 50.00 hrs after you look at and we go over what we did. That is as fair as it gets.We have three lined up for this winter and may be able to do one more.

I was looking at the pics of your car and motor. If you don't have a chassis cert tag on that rollcage, you should address that before getting the paint work done.

Re: Paint job for a race car? - 07/30/09 03:29 PM

find a friend, or a friend of a friend to help with the prep work. That is the majority of the cost. You can talk to a body shop about spraying the color, as someone will prob do it for a few hundred. Or as mentioned, the maaco/scheib guys can spray it(they get lots of practice), its just that they spend no time on prep. You may find someone to handle that part of the job for sponsor-space and save some there. (Having someone more experienced do it will save on cost of gun, having to learn to do it, and they'll have a booth)
Summit paint is an alternative to save on supplies. Someone mentioned colors, basic colors are usually less expensive than reds, etc... So ask about that. You can do it on your budget, or close to it, but you will have to be creative and do alot of the work yourself. Even if your not confident doing major bodywork, there is lots of little details you can do, ie door jambs, under trunk lid, taping, etc....
Good Luck

Re: Paint job for a race car? - 07/30/09 03:43 PM

I paid $3500 for a complete paint job on my Duster and a local bump shop did it. All I had to do as far as body work was prep the door jams and engine compartment. Everything else was taken care of by the body shop. Check out my photo bucket album, the link is in my sig. There is no wax on the car in those pictures. There are body shops around that love to do the old cars (and do them cheep) because it is fun and something out of the norm for them. You just have to shop around.

I would sand down that car and put it in some basic primer, then get my drive train assembled and sorted out.

You can paint the undercarriage and interior with spray cans or a paint brush. Final bodywork and paint can be done later.

Re: Paint job for a race car? - 07/31/09 03:30 PM

To each his own...on all the race cars I've had, the engine, trans, and other gear had to come out numerous times before a good working combination could be sorted out. Thrashing on a race car to make it live throughout an entire season of racing takes its toll on the paint job.

You can paint the undercarriage and interior with spray cans or a paint brush. Final bodywork and paint can be done later.

I disagree. Now is the best time to paint it. It's stripped down and ready for bodywork and paint. Besides, regular primer does not protect the metal from rusting.

Ditto.

Re: Paint job for a race car? - 07/31/09 04:13 PM

Thanks Guys
The only thing holding me back is a paint booth. I dont have the space or place to do this.
I have a car port attached to my house I also thought about adding some lumber and making a temp spray booth with some sheet plastic etc.
I actually have most of the tools, cheapo gravity feed HVLP gun, 18" air file D/A etc, and a 60 gallon compressor.
I might start a thread in the tech section if I could get some of you painters to answer some dumb questions for me.
The car really would be a good one to learn. The car is very straight believe it or not.
But the old primer needs to come off. I would be afraid to paint anything on top of it and lift the paint.
Sand off all the primer with like a 180 grit. It comes of easy like red dust. Then could I just go with a 2k urethane High build, or would I need some type of epoxy/sealer primer, then the high build?
Also things like what size tips need to be answered as in spraying like high build..Im sure it would need a larger tip than normal.
Flash time etc.
If you guys could lead me through out a thread and follow my progress that would be the best thing in the world.
Also, could one spray his primer out side for now? Im talking about building primer blocking the body, guide coats etc...would it matter if it gotta bug or dirt etc?
Tell ya what
Give me about a two weeks and a list of stuff to round up, like what kind of primer i need for the first coat, what grit paper I need etc..What tip size etc..
The guy I got the car off of, told me to forget about any air tools IDK. Said he uses the paint mixing sticks a bunch. Just wraps the sandpaper around the stick, and show me not to go up and down, or side to side but kinda at a angle. And when the paper needs changed just rip off that small piece and go right back at it?
Also, I plan to add some lettering, and if possible add this under my clear coat. Can this be done with Vinyl lettering? Or should this be painted?
At first I thought about copying the Old ShadowWoods Plymouth, but Instead of Black and white, do it in Red and white. Which would make a really cool looking car, and dont think anyone has done this before. But also thought about just going with a Viper Red, or Ruby Red, and just putting "Plymouth" down the 1/4 panel.. and up front adding "Its A Hemi" over each fender well Like the 5&50 tribute car, but curve the lettering around the fender well.

What ya think guys?
Took this "ONE" pic at the Classics this spring.

OP's quote: Whats it cost now days for a good paint job for a race car. I want a good job, not a $500 50 foot'r.
Im hoping it will cost in the $3000-$3500 range.

he said he wanted a "good paint job" for his race car. Not a great paint job for a trailer queen that will see little time on the strip. Has anyone seen the paint job on my car

The shadowWoods plymouth is still being run today by Matt Betzel (Sp?). Gary and Joe Jacobs plymouths were done in the red/white checker board colors. (maybe one of them will post).

By the way, it was mentioned, and I don't want to derail the thread, but I think the cage should be looked at by someone before you go too far. You didn't post many pictures of it, but it looks like it would need some more bars to pass NHRA tech... (floor mod's that severe require rocker bars at least...)

Yea
I need it to at least be a 8.50 cert. Plenty of bars underneath the car though. Just need a halo etc. The tubing is correct wall etc.
Not a very good pic

Re: Paint job for a race car? - 07/31/09 05:38 PM

I would use dupont zinc chromate primer for the first application of primer it has top shelf adhesion and corrosion characteristics. It does sand hard so you can do a wet on wet application of nason 421-19 build primer and do your bodywork on top of that. You DO NOT want to try to straiten dents or waves with primer that is what dollies, body hammers and filler is for the application of 421-19 is simply easier to sand than zinc chromate so two med wet coats are plenty. You can then sand the 421-19 with 100 to apply filler after all the filler is strait and sanded down to 180 grit apply 3 coats of 421-19 over all the filled areas, after it is dry block with 180-220 and sand the rest of the car down with the same apply 3 more coats of 421-19 over the entire car let dry for a couple of days block with 320 to finish getting it perfectly flat and finish sanding with 500 and it is ready to spray.
tips for success:
1)let all primers and fillers dry per directions
2)keep it at least 62 degrees f until dry
3)pre clean before you apply anything every time
4)spend the extra time to do it right,If you don't feel like working on it take a night off, body work needs to be done by someone who is excited about it not by someone who thinks it sucks.
5)Read a book and if you need help pm me I will be happy to answer any questions.

Good luck,Bruce

Re: Paint job for a race car? - 08/02/09 02:05 AM

I spent $3500 on a paint job, single stage, white, no clear coat...RACE CAR.......

Local guy that used to own a body shop did it,,,

I brought him the car as a roller,,,no interior,,motor,,etc,,,he pulled the fenders,,doors, deck lid off,,,,,painted the car and everything seperate,,,and put everything back on,,,lined it up,,,and i did the rest,,,,he also did some minor rust repair,,,(2 small holes in the rear quarter,,,otherwise very solid car)

Car looks good up close,,and has held up very well x the past 3 years....

Dosent the COLOR you choose also dictate how much you might spend ??

I know white is alot easier,,,compared to other colors....

I think i got a good deal,,,for the work he did.....sure i would have paid more elsewhere....

Before...

doors installed,,,prior to trim going back on.........front fenders still off.

I need to find a body guy for those prices....I have had 4 guys look at painting my duster. The prices range from $5k for an "ok" paint job to 10k for a great job. Not to mention that the car is really straight and completely rust free....

OK
I have found A painter for my car, he came out and looked at the car, and we chatted for about 3 hours. He is out of work right now, and doesnt have much on his plate. I have seen his work before, he is the type of guy, that will give you what you want. I know of cars he has painted for $500 total. Cheapy paint jobs that look good for a little while.
But he can lay down some nice paint. He has over 20 years experience paint, and autobody. He is actually a old friend of my Father-in-laws.
Anyways
He has quoted me $1200 for labor. Which I think is a great deal. We have priced out paint, etc...looks like we can get it done for under $2K.
He insisted on a econo line from Dupont (nason, or mason?)
Anyways here is a few priced products.
-$200 for a gallon of red base coat paint.
-$200 for the Good Chromo clear
-$130 for a gallon of fill primer
he has also priced on some Value shade, and some sealer etc....
Looks like it will be in the $700-$800 range for materials...
He said he will knock it out very quick...
3-4 weeks tops....He is getting the car by the middle of the week.
He assured me it will be slick, I plan to take a a guy with me before the actual base coat will get applied to inspect or decide if anything need addressed or changed...
The car will look good, again this is a race car, and function is what its about...
I will post picks and updates when possible.. I havent looked back through the thread, but I remember some people thinking that material alone would be $3k...LOL

I don't see anything about epoxy primer or etch primer in your material list it is the hart and sole of a good long lasting paint job it is about 250.00 for a setup 800.00 sounds very cheep there is still masking paper, tape, tack cloths, clean up thinner, pre cleaner, scotch bright, sand paper, filler, base coat reducer, base coat hardner, sealer, sealer hardner, sealer reducer, the list goes on and on.Unless he is donating those things to get the job and he still has a good size electric bill from the fans and compressor to pay, don't sound like much prophet left in the end.make sure of what you are getting for that price if he is planning on putting fill primer over bare metal to save money you will be repainting it the first time it gets any water sprayed on it like rain or washing. If it gets a chip in it rust will run under the paint like a scared rabbit. Not trying to pee in your cheerios but 700-800 just will not get it for ALL of the proper materials for a lasting paint job.
Good luck,Bruce

IDK
there isnt anything to mask up on the car though. No glass, trim, interior what so ever. No chrome, tail lights etc.
He said he had some supply's left over from previous jobs. He didnt say what, I will be picking up the supplies, so we will see.

it all depends on the quality of the products you buy Bob. you can get a gallon of paint from summit for under a $100 . I would make up a written contract if I were you. just to protect yourself

paper and tape is the least of the cost you are going to well over 1000.00 in materials if it is done correctly
