That's a lotta coin for repros. Being 1985, wouldn't these be the 6.5" version?

There's a long story behind these trim rings, between the original parts produced in the 70s and the repros produced in the 2000s. Here's a good thread on this:

https://board.moparts.org/ubbthread...read/Board/1/main/33330/type/thread.html

Odds are, what the seller has listed are the 6.5" version but, the only way to know for certain is to have the person measure the depth.

Regardless, you're right, that's a lot a money.

Mike.

At first I thought they must be for the 69 only 14 inch brushed rings as they are very rare nos and if these were those that would be allot, but 7K for these? good luck with that

Thanks for the informative link. Always good to learn.

I was just a bit shocked at the 7k asking price as ive never seen anything close to that.

In that Thread a comment by snoopy caught my attention
Quote

Back in the early 70's, when Chrysler released their 15x6.5" Rallye wheels, they decided to make the trim rings fit the new 15x6.5" Rallye wheels. So they modified the dies that were used to make the 15x7" rings. For some reason, known only to Chrysler, they used the same part numbers that were used for the original 15x7" rings. This came back to bite them on the butt when they decided to reproduce the original 15x7" trim rings. After they made a batch of the new rings, they discovered that they had reproduced the 15x6.5" trim rings instead of the 15x7".

GM did the same thing with the PB, master assemblies on the C3 corvettes about 1972 changing the length of the MC pushrod and depth of the bore in the MC piston. Because it was only sold as 1 part number they did not change it. 40 years later I'm chasing my tail because of a low but effective brake pedal. Finally found the above information on the Corvette Forum posted by an old guy like I am now. I had a short Pushrod booster with a deep bore master. In addition, the replacement/ rebuilders were unaware of the above as well so it was a roll of the dice when replacing either 1 of the two components. IE: Master cyl. or Booster. If you did them as an assembly no problem.
That fiasco cost me about 30-40 hours. I should mention I was known in my engineering capacities for being a problem because I would raise hell insisting on 100% backwards compatibility or a NEW part # when a change was made

Plenty of threads on plenty of forums over the years on these
The tag with part number, date and year pretty much tell the tale as per the old thread.
A friend has 4 of these NOS as well...same packaging, same year date.
We've had them out of the wrapper plenty times..they are the 6.5 version.
Poster had his out of the packaging for pictures.......
why not do a tape measure picture like this proving the 15x7 claim.
15x7 ring on left, 15x6.5 ring on right

I asked the seller to measure the height and he responded with:

Just a hair under 3 inches. Here is a picture. Take care, Clint H.

Look at where the end of the tape is though, it is 1/4" or so past the edge of the ring.

Something's definitely "up" with the seller. This is his response in My Messages, followed by my trying to answer back. I was just going to say thank you.

Tom
Those appear to be different trim rings, notice the old weathered part numbered paper tags , which are the correct ones used on 15x7 ring.
Posters pics show new shiny later tags.
You can never get a true measurement the way the poster showed, if tape measure angles in following the trim ring taper in, it can give it more.
Trim ring other way around, flat surface, tape straight up like this.

Back in the 1979-1984 I was spending my entire paycheck buying parts for my Challengers. One of those parts were new 15" trim rings. But something crazy was happening. I would order 4 of them and when they came in 2 might fit and 2 had the gap. The difference was the box. If it had the blue and white Chrysler parts sticker on it, it was a 15x7. If it had the red, white and blue mopar sticker it was a 15x6.5. It didn't take long to figure out that Chrysler had reused the part numbers on the 15x6.5 trim ring so it was a crap shoot on whether I got the correct ones or not. I sent many back. Then one day I was picking up my parts at the dealer and a zone rep just happened to be there. In my stash of new parts were some new trim rings and with the same issue. The parts manager, who I had become great friends with, called the rep over to show him what was going on and I told him the problem. He apologized for the issues and then invited me up to the Tappan NY parts warehouse to get the correct rings! I drove up with my girlfriend and my Challenger and met him. We walked into the warehouse and it was like the last scene of Indiana jones with many rows of bins stacked 5 high. I got into a golf cart and we proceeded to drive over to the correct bin. There were hundreds of trim ring boxes but he picked out the last 12 correct blue/white label boxes and then sent them to my dealer. Myself and 2 buddies (with a T/A and an AAR) got those last sets. I can't speak for the other warehouses but back in the day, I got the last 12 out of Tappan NY. And they were in boxes, not vacuum wrapped. They also were a lot cheaper then $7k!

Looks like the seller figured out he has the 6.5 version. He sent me this message this morning, and lowered his price to $3,000.

They are 2 3/4 inches in depth. I lowered my price significantly. Sorry for any confusion. Take care!

Stupid question

So is $3,000 a fair price ? From $7,000 YIKES - Sounds ridiculous to me ON BOTH prices as I have not shopped for trim rings in probably over 20 years

No one makes reproduction trim rings anymore ? Wheel Vintiques or ?

Anyone make a decent 1971 Brushed Trim Ring for the 15 x 7 / 15 x 8 Reproduction Rallies
