Installing the early PTK module is as easy as removing the existing end plate and installing the module. If the later module is used, the screw at the red arrow needs to be removed or a screw with a thinner head installed (preferred).

A and A used to sell a kit that did what you want. You could do the needle in a haystack thing and find it in an early six cylinder trans. One of my luckiest finds ever was asking my trans guy if he had one. He literally reached about three feet away and pulled out a complete setup. He said it had laid there for many years just in case. He rebuilt them all, but he was about as hardcore a mopar guy as you’ll meet.
I want my fair share

The detent you feel is near WOT while the PTK is, well, at part throttle. Advantage is it kicks down at much less throttle to prevent lugging the engine.
Mopar was the last of the Big Three to incorporate PTK across the entire line their AT's.

I would think a big block in a dart probably would do fine without the need for the kick down very often.
A slant 6 or a 318 in a B or C body is a different matter (especially in the 70s when lots of cars got stuck with 2:76 or even worse, the 80s with 2:45 gears).. That part time kickdown was a nice addition. You didn't have to floor it every time to get the trans to downshift for that extra kick. it made a few powerless slugs at least somewhat drivable. The other app is a cammed motor that is a bit lazy below 2500 RPM
