Valve body part throttle upgrade and OD ?

Valve body part throttle upgrade and OD ? - 05/28/23 06:20 PM

I have a 70 ? 727 in my 38 Ford with a TF-2 Kit. Is there an easy way to add the part throttle downshift feature or does it opem a can of worms?
I've also been contemplating upgrading to an OD trans or gear vendors unit. This question may be best asked in the street rod section but thought i would start here.
I'm not to up to date on the OD tranny's. So I'm not even sure what I should look at if I decided to go that way. i will sy the 727 is a snug fit in the tailshaft area as Ford used an X member in their frames. The engine is a warmed over 340 so something that will take some abuse is required.
TIA

Installing the early PTK module is as easy as removing the existing end plate and installing the module. If the later module is used, the screw at the red arrow needs to be removed or a screw with a thinner head installed (preferred).

A and A used to sell a kit that did what you want. You could do the needle in a haystack thing and find it in an early six cylinder trans. One of my luckiest finds ever was asking my trans guy if he had one. He literally reached about three feet away and pulled out a complete setup. He said it had laid there for many years just in case. He rebuilt them all, but he was about as hardcore a mopar guy as you’ll meet.

i dont want to start a p###ing match but what is the advantage of a ptk tf? i had a big block dart (not original) with a 67 727 with a shift kit and the detent in the pedal travel told me exactly when it would kick down. wouldnt that be a good thing to have?

The detent you feel is near WOT while the PTK is, well, at part throttle. Advantage is it kicks down at much less throttle to prevent lugging the engine.

Mopar was the last of the Big Three to incorporate PTK across the entire line their AT's.

I would think a big block in a dart probably would do fine without the need for the kick down very often.

A slant 6 or a 318 in a B or C body is a different matter (especially in the 70s when lots of cars got stuck with 2:76 or even worse, the 80s with 2:45 gears).. That part time kickdown was a nice addition. You didn't have to floor it every time to get the trans to downshift for that extra kick.
it made a few powerless slugs at least somewhat drivable.

The other app is a cammed motor that is a bit lazy below 2500 RPM wink
