You can buy a weighted flex plate that will allow you to use any neutral balance torque converter.
They are offered by B&M and others.
Just be sure to get the correct one for a cast crank 440.

I think what Dwayne meant was to be sure to get the flexplate for a cast crank big block and not the externally balanced forged crank 440.

I think it was a 50 gram weight, I’d double check what was used by the factory and see about welding that on there before pulling the trans for the special flex plate, which is your only other choice.

Thanks everyone. I have to change the torque converter anyway, too high a stall. Looking for something closer to stock for easy cruising Not sure what to look for aftermarket? Thanks, Jim

If the motor is basically stock, you could use a rebuilt factory 12” unit, like what would have come behind muscle car era 440’s.
If there are some hot rod items involved, particularly a performance cam........ something like a factory high stall 11” might be preferred.
Some of that choice comes down to personal preferences.
