Trying to remove a broken stud from front hub.

I have the hub separated from the drum, and can tap the stud ALMOST through, from front to back. But once the knurl is about halfway through the hub, it stops SOLID.

I can move the stud back and forth easily, but once it's half way through, it will not go any further.

Am I missing something here?

front studs are swaged to hold the drum on , you got the drum off how ? the swage needs to be ground down to get the stud out

Actually the drum separated from the hub pretty easily.

With the drum on the work bench, hub still attached and lug nuts on the stubs, tapped on the four remaining studs and it came apart.

These swages, are they a separate piece, or is the stud's knurls "swollen" to creat the swage?
thanks John.

the studs is swollen to create the swage . tap the stud back into place and cut what is remaining off just off the hub , should pop right out .

This is a classic 'opinions vary' question.

Although I agree that there is a swage in there, I've never had one that didn't come out with a few smacks from a 2-lb hammer.

Parts I seek: driver doorpanel, 65 Sport Fury, prefer black, needs to be 7-8 on 10 scale, might buy set 16" x 6" Dodge truck wheel(s), from early 70s?, takes 9" dogdish - need for a research job so cheaper is better. 69-73 C-body caliper brackets and/or splashields Send a PM.

Yeah, well, I've followed around behind "you" a few times, and doing this often enlarges the hole enough that a new stud won't fit tight, either

If it didn't enlarge the hole when it was installed new, I would think it should "uninstall" the same way.

The stud is swaged after it is installed in the hub & the drum is installed...

Here's a pic of a stud installed before (right) and after (left) swaging; the swaging process does enlarge the shank, so driving the stud out without removing the swaging does indeed risk enlarging the hole.

Exactly correct. They work just like a rivet.

Dang John, your depth of knowledge and the pictures to back it up is astonishing. You have forgotten more than I'll ever know...
