Wondering, what year's Dakota's 5 speeds interchange (V6 models, I have a 97, know of an 88 I can pick up cheap), and also, wondering how hard it would be to put a higher 5th(or maybe an OD range) gear?

Anyone tried this?

All the 5 spds have an OD 5th gear, it is a .71 ratio.

They are all interchangable depending on what you want to swap with it.

Hmm, my 97 doesn't seem to drop off too much when I'm in 5th. It's not marked as "OD".

Perhaps it is.....

Nope. as was posted previously, all 5 speeds in Dakotas would be OD 5th. Probably an AX 15 that year. The New Process A 535 used in '87-89s (maybe a bit longer in years) was not very strong. the AX 15 isn't that great either, but is better. but both are OD in 5th!

my 5th gear doesn't seem to be OD. it doesn't coast like a typical OD unit. 95 5.2 5 speed

I have a 97 V6 5 spd also, as mentioned the 5th gear is an OD.

According to Allpar the V6 used a AS 82 transmission, 4th gear is 1:1 and 5th is .79 OD.

However, Most other reading would lead to believe it is an AX15. Definitely not the NV3500, which has the bell housing cast in smooth with the case, and appears to be V-8 only.
