hi
How did you/would you go about it? The slant is leaving sometime within a couple of weeks, and I will have some time with an empty engine bay. I'm not really looking for a factory look, but I'd like to find out how the rest of you first took off the dirt/grime and then how you either dressed it up or cleaned up the wiring mess. Thanks in advance!

I take plenty of pictures. I make sure I have a wiring diagram and then I go to unwrapping the "tape". Everything under the wrap should be clean. What is not clean I use mineral spirits to remove the grease and then wash it all in soapy water. After everything is clean and inspected I wrap it back the way I found it. It is not as big a job as it appears at first.

Straight Simple Green and lots of rubbing. For more resistant areas, I used lacquer thinner, but only sparingly. Re-wrap as necessary for a clean look.

I'm going to be cleaning wiring in the near future too.

So what wiring does everyone re-use and what wiring do you recomend replacing? Even the wiring that looks NEW is still 35+ years old.

I cleaned with laquer thinner, repaired wires, and tested. I re-wrapped where necessary, taped all the color wires and connectors, and semi-gloss blacked wherever the wrap was worn looking. This is the only good wire shot I could find, you can see the original colored wire on the cruise servo, but the harness is painted.

Only if you are not married or get it out of the dishwasher before your significant other finds out what you put in her dishwasher. I got busted leaving a set of valve covers in my wife's dishwasher. Now I cant use it.Boo Hoo for me. Life is good. It actually works on wiring harness' to soften up the tape and wires.

I've used hand cleaner in the past too.

And for simple spot cleaning or to remove stubborn spots I use a scotch brite (with the hand cleaner) or a heavy duty cloth wipes (the type to clean hands) in a can.

Oh whatever you do just cover the wiring with something black. There is no need to make a wire harness stand out.

Allen Here's a novel idea, let's not throw a bunch of parts at the car hoping it will fix the problem and instead spend a little time diagnosing it first. Life was a little easier when I was just a wrench.

Me three, works great and makes the cladding soft and supple. I saturate a shop towel with the cleaner, wipe em down and rinse with water.

I know I'll get flamed for this, but I use NO Touch tire care. Works quite well.
