I have had this problem with my 2001 Durango since around 2007. Prior to 2007 the engine used no oil between oil changes however after 2007 the oil consumption went to 3 quarts between oil changes after the gunk appeared.

If it's not using coolant, don't worry about the muck(there are tsb's on that), and if it's running good, I would put a new mfg's pcv valve in it. 3 qts is way too much use.

My 01 Durango with the 4.7 did the same thing. I just assumed it was condensation mixing with oil vapor around the cap. I didn't notice any coolant leaks or excessive oil consumption.

Same here with an '02 4.7 Durango.

Typical with short runs building up condensation. It always rises to the top of the engine. Worse in areas that don't get washed by the oil. Common areas are oil fill, dipstick, and valve cover areas. Short runs and prolonged oil changes are the main cause.

4.7, especially when used for short trips, especially in cold weather. Replace the PCV. Clean the muck. Drive it. Mines at 220K and uses a little oil.

If the results don't match the theory, change the theory.

Hi,

No coolant usage, just water running out of the PCV valve into the oil fill tube from condensation when the engine is turned off during cold weather only ( I live in the St. Louis, Mo area). Do you have the TSB number for this issue? By the way I replace the PCV valve with a Mopar part once a year.

Thanks,

Mike
