Being a fanatic about changing my oil every 3000 miles, it's just about time to change the oil in my new 08 Ram Hemi. I'm thinking about going with Mobil 1 in my truck (never used synthetic before).I just wanted to make sure those rumors or myths about damaging seals was just that, not true. Any other thoughts would be appreciated? Dave

I've used Mobil 1 in my 06 Hemi Ram from day 1 and had no issues at all.

Oh, and here comes the obligatory post from CompSyn in 5...4...3...

Mobil 1 will be fine. Pick up a 5 quart jug in the weight of your choice at Walmart for $26.00.

It doesn't hurt seals, but synthetic will eat the sludge and varnish out of an engine and may cause seal to leak if the varnish was all that kept it from leaking.

My attitude is that if the synthetic cleans the motor out and a seal starts to leak because it was weak it needed to be replaced anyway.

I go 7500, and it's still really clean at the change.

All motor oils must be compatible with the various seal materials used in an engine. Oil must not cause seals to shrink, crack, degrade or dissolve.

Ideally, oil should cause seals to expand or "swell" slightly to ensure continued proper sealing.

Don't forget to pick up 2 single quarts with that also. Our 2008 HEMI Ram takes 7 quarts.

Also note that the oil filter thread size is different than previous years. The can and seal look just like a 5281090 but the thread is larger.

No longer taking $h!t from anyone!

The thread size of the filter went from standard size to metric size.

You need to use the weight recomended in the manual. I have heard reports that thicker oil causes erratic operation of the MDS system.

As well as the change interval or it will give them an excuse to void the lifetime powertrain warranty.

Use Amsoil, its the best out there. Beat Mobil 1 in wear tests plus if you use their high mile oil filter you only have to change your oil and filter every 10,000 miles. They say go 20,000 miles on the oil and filter but dear God don't do that! I run this in my granite blue metallic 2006 single cab Chevy 3500 4X4 dually with the 360HP Duramax diesel and the 6 speed Allison tranny and that thing purrs like a kitten. Amsoil is the best, all others fall short. Plus you save money on the longer oil change intervals. Take care, Clint H.

Longer oil change intervals? Don't do it! People will spend thousands on super heavy-duty performance mods on a street driven vehicle and cheap-out on oil changes. Just can't figure?!

which he cannot do while under warranty.

That is simply not true. No manufacturer can deny warranty claims based on (1) the type of motor oil used, and (2) the length of the Oil Change Interval.

Sure they can make recommendations on what oil type, grade, and oil change interval to go by, but not doing so does not automatically void the warranty.

Warranty claims are approved or denied based on failure analysis.

If any manufacturer or dealership tried to say otherwise, they would be violation of the law.

Don’t believe me?

Change the oil at the recomended intervals, or even more often. I change mine every 2000 miles.

AS for the "you can extend the interval" law, good luck with that.

Machines require maintenance. Not doing the proper maintenance is considered driver abuse, and voids warrantees. Just the same as performance mods do.

The car manufacturers have all figured out that if they deny every warrenty claim they can, it will save them millions of dollars. These days they need every penny. Don't give them the opportunity to save some money at your expense over something silly like an oil change.

“Conventional wisdom has held that the oil should be changed about every 3,000 miles. This notion has been ingrained into people's heads for decades, in part as a marketing ploy by oil companies. The 3,000-mile interval made sense when engines used single-grade nondetergent oils. But with the latest oils and car designs, it's no longer necessary to change oil that often under normal driving conditions.” –Steve Ritter, in Chemical & Engineering News, March 13, 2006
