Just curious what determines what gear the burnout should be started in? Is it the valve body, or the other internals? I have a nicely modded tranny from a reputable builder here and im not sure at all what internal mods have been done, except for a griner valve body that i saw when i dropped the pan for service. Its a reverse manual valve body. I will call them to ask specifics, but i fear that since i dont have any detailed paperwork on it, they might not be able to tell me what i want to know. I just see on paperwork: Pro-comp build and max hp rating 650hp.
Any general insight would be helpful.
Thx

I think it depends on if it is a Low Band Apply or not.On a non LBA,if doing a burnout in 1st gear and something breaks it could damage the tranny.
On my '73 I do my burnouts in 3rd gear, 3.91 gears 295/55/15 tire.

It's built to handle 650 hp is a pretty broad statement IMO. In a 2700# or 3700# car? It makes a difference. I'd just start the burn out in second then move to high, there shouldn't be any issues that way.

Main thing as I understand it is to never back out of the throttle in 1st. Beats the bejeezus out of the sprag.
Years ago in my ignorance I started burnouts in 1st, quickly shifting up; wasn't enough wheel speed for a good burnout anyway.

None of the OE manufacturers rate their transmissions by horsepower, only torque.
Wonder why.

Never in 1st. Period. My routine was to drop it into 2nd right after pulling out of the lanes and before it even went into the water. I also would not putt around in the pits in low gear. Trans was in low gear from after the burnout to the 1-2 shift, period. Even when we were using the 3 speed throttle stop racing. 1st gear to leave, immediately to second on a timer, run the stop all in second. Worked..

Be thankful you have a manuel valve body. I've seen several trans. blow doing first gear burn out. Some with severe foot and leg injures. Second gear burn outs only, be aware before going into the water box to be in second.

More times than not it’s the drivers fault.

I agree.. you can NOT pedal the car when in low gear.. shift it.. I
have been racing a 727 since I could drive and never had a explosion
and seldom ever need a rebuild.. drive it right and it works great..
dont pedal so you load and unload and load the sprag.. thats
a killer
wave

"Never trust it" is a little harsh. Like anything else - Use the right components, maintain it properly, drive it correctly and it will be fine.

I’ll admit I typically start my burnouts in 1st, but just to get the tires moving then immediately through 2nd to D. I run an LBA valvebody. No problems so far.
