real early ones use a different style altogether, not interchangeable with either of the later styles, it's smaller. I want to say that when the stopped making the cable shifted TF was when they quit using the older, smaller style. So 65 and back?
They say there are no such thing as a stupid question. They say there is always the exception that proves the rule. Don't be the exception.

Correct. 1965 and earlier had the small opening in the extension housing and there was no “adapter” used, the cable end had a plug design that fit in the opening. 1966 was the first year for the adapter which allowed greater range of pinion tooth counts just by simply replacing the pinion shaft and gear assembly.
