What kind of 727 speedo cable is this & what are my options? - 10/30/18 06:28 AM

Howdy

I ordered a speedo cable and gear for my transmission to screw into an autometer mechanical speedo/odo gauge. I’ve only ever messed with 4 speeds that iirc had a long metal shaft with a plastic gear and a screw in square drive cable.

I have no idea what year my big block 727 is but this is a pic of the speedo drive I just pulled out of it. The cable was cut and crimped shut when I got the trans- I never messed with it before. It seems the cable is part of the speedo drive which is all plastic. Can I get a male threaded housing for the female cable end? I’d rather replace the whole unit and seals if possible. I don’t know if these parts changed by year or what- a little education would be awesome if somebody knows!

Thanks

Can I just get this kind of setup and throw it in there? I do know how to select a tooth count and clock the housing. What parts interchange and where can I find them for sale?

The aluminum housing and matching parts will fit right in your extension housing.

Your other parts is the setup they changed to sometime in the late 70s.

Yes, 77 was the first year for that style. Yes, you can change it back to the older metal housing style plus the older gears are easier to find in different tooth counts. I probably have the housing if you can`t find one local.

I knew 78 had that newer setup but didn't know if it was the first year or not. So 77... More of that oddball information my head with wrench

real early ones use a different style altogether, not interchangeable with either of the later styles, it's smaller. I want to say that when the stopped making the cable shifted TF was when they quit using the older, smaller style. So 65 and back?

Correct. 1965 and earlier had the small opening in the extension housing and there was no “adapter” used, the cable end had a plug design that fit in the opening.

1966 was the first year for the adapter which allowed greater range of pinion tooth counts just by simply replacing the pinion shaft and gear assembly.
