I wouldn't run less than 3/4", but 1" is better.

If the endplay gets too tight then it can be difficult to remove the driveshaft. There has to be room to move the driveshaft forward so it can come out of the pinion yoke.
That's my thought too, since the u-joint cups are around 1 inch in diameter.
