Hi all,

I have a friend that is interested in buying the big block 727 transmission out of a motor home I am parting to mate up behind his 354 hemi. Obviously the question is whether or not it is a direct bolt on application, aside from any crankshaft pilot hole/torque converter hub issues. He has his own machine shop and access to even more advanced machining operations so modification/fabrication is not an issue. Thanks in advance for any info on this.

Allright then, Is it even worth pursuing on his part. As I said before machining and fabrication is not an issue.

Depends on what he wants , there are adaptors that will bolt chevy trans to the motor , and i think the small block 727 is a closer fit ?

The motorhome trans will need a new mainshaft and tailshaft housing for use in a car .

Dave,

According to the 61-71 Dodge sweptline site the small block 727 is a direct bolt on, with the use of a B&M flexplate, if I remember right. And yes there are adaptors available to mount a Chevy tranny to it. As far as the output shaft and driveshaft it is not an issue. This is going into a 1949 Chevy panel truck "monster" 4 wheeler with 44" tires for use at the sand dunes on Michigan's west coast. Once again thanks to all for the info.

The SB trans is the closest. Those motors have the crank a little bit longer and a thin adapter factory, but the factory adapter won't work either. The reason there is the dial pins are in a different location to.

QEC(I think that's the name of his company....been around for a long time),TRWATERS, HOT HEADS & PAW as the adapters too.

If you have access to machine shop you can make the adapter. it puts the bolts for the trans in the correct location plus spaces the trans back to fit properly. This is a paw unit for a chevy trans there are similar for 727.

The problem with mating a 727 to any '61 and earlier V8 is the crank flange, the early flange extends further from the block, has 8 bolts and registers the flywheel/flexplate differently. Most Hemi-to-727 adapters are fairly thick in order to space the trans back and correct the bolt pattern.

In the pic below the crank in the background is the earlier with the extended flange.

Actually the A block has a lot in common with its EARLIER relation, the Firepower Hemi. So you could say the A/LA block is based on the Firepower.
A smallblock transmission is nearly a direct fit, needs only a little adapter plate stuff. Ask TR Waters.
The motorhome 727 has beefy gts and you may want to put them in a 727 behind a 354, but remember a 354 is the same displacement size as a 360.
