Hello all,
I have my engine running and have even drove the pick up. (WOW) My only two questions are first, where should I set my timing at. I started it and broke the cam in at 10 btc. Engine specs are as follows. Scat balanced rods and crank, KB hyper 10.5:1 pistons J heads 2.02's with gasket match porting and some bowl work 64cc chambers, Block has been decked for a true 10.5. I am running the Lunati 60405 with matching springs, retainers keepers and Harland Sharp rockers.Exhaust is shorty headers out to 2 1/2 exhaust. Have not adjusted rockers or timing yet. Also this is a 89 Dakota that has no room between the water pump and rad. Therefore I have a 69 cast iron pump but it is tough to time the engine because it exits over the timing tab, runs down and under the balancer to the passenger side rad. Full tube headers on the way. Any ideas on the timing or the water pump would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Shawn

well you could mount a pointer on the other side find true TDC and paint a white line for your new 0.
generally you want 35 to 36 total with vacuum advance unhooked and if you feel the need to hook up vacuum advance in the future make sure it is on ported vacuum and NOT manifld.

I'm assuming that you dont have room to use the thicker 70 & up w/p that would put the hose on the pass side with the rad nipple? What he said, find true tdc, make a sturdy coat hanger pointer(or buy that one off eGay). Mark the dampener your self .0632683" is 1 degree so 10 degrees initial would be .633" & 32 total would be 2.025". Cut 2 pieces of coat hanger wire with your side cutters, trim the ends square & to the these exact lengths with a file & with your 0-1" & 2-3" micrometers & use the 2 pieces curved onto the circumference of the harmonic dampener to measure & mark your new EXACT timing marks & your perfect. EDIT someone(I forget who) offers a hi perf version of the early cast iron water pump which might be a good addition for you.

I will play with it some more when it is back together. Rear axles are out waiting on new and new rims on the way. Dash cluster is out now, trying to put my tach where the gas gauge was. Full length headers should be here any day now. Darn that sounds like a lot when I only have 1 arm right now. Had the other cut on a week ago.
Thanks for the replys
Shawn

I run the '69 and earlier pump with the lower hose on the driver's side. I bought a '68 and earlier timing pointer and reindexed the damper so I could set it via the passenger's side:

I run my SB stroker's timing at 32 degrees locked. He to lock it to calm down in gear idle. Starts easily so not a problem. I don't know if 32 is the best yet, haven't had a chance to measure the effects of other settings.

Do any of you run power steering with this shorter pump? If so could you post a few pics.
Thanks
