Tranny linkage adjustment or roostercomb isolation into the tranny "failure"

Agreed...Those are the two common issues...You can also check the linkage for excessive wear and slop during movement...

next time it does it I would pull the connector off of the NSS switch on the side of the trans & see if the middle pin has continuity to the nearby trans metal case. If it does not then as said I would undo the linkage from the lever & with the lever firmly in the park & neutral detents see if it now has continuity. if in the first case the middle pin has continuity then I would check the electrical connectors starting with the NSS plug in connector & all the way up to the starter relay for a poor connection. most all wiring continuity problems are at the terminals/connections.

This is usually the culprit....worn or missing.

Greetings: I changed the neutral starting switch and it did not make a difference. This gearshift linkage torque shaft bushing goes where. Do you have a picture from a service manual? Is there only one or two. I
am not the wrench man. If you could provide more info would be helpful.
THANKS so much for this info. You can e mail me at moparjack67@sbcglobal.net or cell phone 330-719-0606. Jack Gocala

It goes in the hole on the bracket bolted on the side of the transmission. The end of the shaft from the frame bracket goes inside that bushing. It uses just one, at least I can't remember there being one on the frame bracket, been too long since I messed with all that. If you can't find one my brother used a short piece of garden hose. work

This is the piece inside the tranny. The unconvered points gives the ground to the point at NSS on P and N

That piece engages to the tranny linkage ( despite the application legend, works te same in all cars )

If linkage is not correctly adjusted, the points won't meet between NSS and roostercomb lever hence won't source the ground to the starter relay.

Now, you can get some dirty the points inside, worn, linkage play or due worn or missed pieces like the bushing mentioned, or simply needing to be readjusted
