Did you by chance disassemble the pot connector(column to box)? That is the only thing in the "E" system that is not clocked. If re-assembled 180 degrees out, it will cause the problem you have. Don't ask me how I know...

The new "box" is the key here. Dr Dave has the right answer and probably the only answer, and the easiest answer, all at the same time.

Its just that the rest of the mopar world will call you a hack and would rather live with the wheel off than fix it Dave's way. As I said before, doing this way is worse than owning two cone sure grips at the same time.

Dr Daves answer. File the fat looking key out of the steering wheel and put it on straight. Then, don't tell anybody.....just go quiet.........

That's akin to putting a band air on your head and leaving the crowbar in that causing the bleeding.

Something is wrong, fix it. and the master spline on the steering wheel is not the problem. Listening to hacks can be though.

Don't be the exception.

You are right! I can handle the spokes being off until I find the problem but the turn signal cancelling is driving me nuts.

TS cancel will never function correctly until steering wheel is positioned correctly when front wheels are at straight ahead.

However you should be able to Bubba it by reposition of cancel cam inside of crush can. Not advisable but can be done as I recall,,,,,far better to correct initial problem as steering box is not operating at top center when driving straight ahead. This is not good

I agree with getting to the bottom of it. My car is a '73 Dart Sport. A LOOONG way from a restored E-body. Did I care about re-clocking the wheel? No. Does it drive great? Yes.

Jeez....

It is impossible for a rebuilder to reassemble the box 90 deg "out". Twisted splines, I have seen, but you'd think they would have caught that.

The problem is was there is no known "before" condition. Turn the wheel as you described, exactly 1/2 way between the stops, regardless of wheel position. Then snap (and post) a pix from underneath looking straight up at the pitman. We'll know if the problem is with the box / pitman / column / wheel or bent steering linkage.

This.

It's not rocket science. If your local front end shop can't spot this in 5 minutes on the rack, find a different shop. And don't let them do your laundry either.

I know that exact problem. Have "new" boxes in both cars. Installed one in the Challenger 10 years ago, and just installed a Firm Feel box in the Bee. Both cars have the problem that the steering wheel isn't straight after just exchanging the steering box. On one car the steering wheel points to the left, on the other to the right, albeit not very much. One or two teeth re-clocking should do it, but I haven't done it yet.
