how soon can it be waxed after being painted? I recall someone saying that it will be over 2 weeks before the paint drys.

wax right after buffing, that's what i did, usually on the last day after the last wetsand i let it sit in the sun for a few hours, on my orange bug i painted it in the dead of a canadian winter, no issues. unlike automotive paints that use hardners and reducers, the rust paint just has the mineral spirits and all the solvent gasses escape in 4 hours or so, from there on it just dries harder, automotive paints release gasses for weeks after painting, that's why u can't wax for at least 2 weeks.

I gave up on painting my hood red as I didn't like how the color turned out. I decided to use semi-gloss black instead. I am not getting the results I'm looking for. Can anyone give me some advice on this? Here is a pic:

if u want semigloss don't wetsand and polish it, unless u go with gloss.

Are you saying that I should dry sand instead? I like the way the color/flatness is, but I am having trouble figuring out how to avoid those dang runs. I've read all pages in this thread and applied every "good" method, but I still get those. Blah.

my integra hood is kicking my butt also. the rest of the car is ok and the paint went over super nice on the polyurthen(ms) bumpers.
if you figure it out tell me. that picture looks just like my hood.

Exit, how many coats have you done so far, and do you have any spots where the original paint can be seen still?
I'm on effectively coat #6 and there are a couple areas where you can kind of see a little dark below... but I'm doing THIN coats.

i think if you place the good on a slant it will not have those problems. I'm going to try that tomorrow.

I've still only done the 6 coats and it's see through in spots where there was dark.
The weather has been weird here and I'm waiting for the temps to go back up and the humidity down.. should be ready to roll again Wednesday if the weather man is right.

I think that would result in more runs. Perhaps your application method is different on the horizontal areas, even slightly, to where you're putting too much paint there since that is what causes the runs.
Press all the paint you can out of that roller (or as much as you can do within about 10-15 seconds) then firmly apply it to the surface. If done right it will leave enough paint to cover the surface but wont show any signs of running at any angle the surface happens to be on.

Thanks Exit, I'll try that next coat. I get alot of bubbles when I press on the roller like that, but I'll do it anyway and see what type of results I can get.

Ive only gotten bubbles if there's too much paint on the roller.. squeeze more of it out, pushing the roller hard into the bumps in the tray to get it out, then there shouldn't be any bubbles at all.

Jacob, It was a PPG product which means it's probably pretty pricey. Personally I plan on experimenting with Rustoleum's rusty metal primer and a roller. Jax2A

Yeah, really.
I had better luck putting the car and paint in a huge plastic bag and shaking it vigorously.
Just make sure you tape off the windows and stuff first.
