Central Missouri Fort Leonard...
Hi every one. I haven't made a race car post on her in a few years. Had to get out of the game for a few years.but I am back.lol well I am buying a tubed out 1974 dart sport, used to be a old race car. But I am going to be making a street/strip car out of it. But have a few questions. The car has a mustang II front end. I know it's kind of old school, but what do you think about the set up? Is anybody still using it?
I will be installing the engine/trans out of a 2000 dodge Durango with the 5.9. I will also be installing the factory fuel injection.
Second question.
I am going to have to weld in a set of motor mounts or run a motor plate. I would just run a engine plate, sounds like it would be lots easier. But I wanted to run the factory magnum belt set up and it looks like I will loose it if I run the engine plate. Does anybody make a weld on motor mount kit or is it fab time. Here is a pic of the car. Thanks mopar6r

Thanks Mike. If I have any trouble with it can I ask you questions about it? Also I might have some trans questions for ya. Did you ever race your rampage down the 1/4 mile? If so what did it run?

Thanks Mike. I have never messed with the mustang II stuff. So will be looking for advice etc on it. I want to use the 46RE over drive trans with lock up converter. Just haven't found out if you can get one with higher than stock stall yet.

What I did was change input shaft and pump
assembly so I could put a high stall conc
in.. I'm running a 4.10 gear with with the
OD trans.. I shut the OD off when racing.. that
way I get the max rpm for racing... thats with
a 4800 rpm stall... with the OD on I can cruise
at 2900 rpm at 75 mph
wave

Looks like a cool project. Mustang II front ends are pretty solid pieces. I don't think fabbing up some motor mounts would be that big a deal.

Sounds great Mike. So did you just use a pump and input shaft out of a 727? Also I think I have enough alto red racing clutches left over from my 727 build. Can I use them in the 46RE? I just have to buy the steels.

Have any recommendations on mounts ? I have a V8 spool mount k frame I was thinking about cutting the mounts off of. The k frame it self is junk. But the engine mounts are still good.

Yeah... I just changed the input shaft and
the pump to fit a 727 conv.. as to the frictions
and steels.. I cant say for sure.. 727 parts are
a little smaller than the parts in my 518... it
will be easy enough to find out

Mike is there a certain pump and input shaft I should look for? I think I have a left over pump and input shaft from a 71/74 727 I could use.what did you use for a valve body?

Nothing wrong with a Mustang II front end. What matters is the quality (or lack of) of the parts used and the skill/ability of the persons who installed it.

If the results don't match the theory, change the theory.

Welcome to the Club. If I would have known I would have made you a swinging deal on the roller or as turn-key.

Mike I am not sure if mine was a kit or what?

Do you have coil overs or just the Mustang springs on the front end? I had the Alston (Mustang copy) on a tube chassis Cuda went 125 mph no problem. Had tubular upper and lower arms with Koni coilovers. It still took awhile to get the bump steer right, even had to shorten the rack down 1-1/2. Very easy to line up. If the whole one piece setup was installed on yours, no problem

Hi mine has adjustable coil overs. Mine has what looks like the stock mustang II upper and lower control arms. I found a set of tubberler arms I am going to get for it

Mine is on the front end of my 38 Ply.. I'm
gonna pull the 440 out and out in a gen3 to get
the front lighter.. I'm still working on it
but its on the back burner till I get the Rampage
done so I can put the time into it.. I've had the
interior out of it 3 times now.. not happy... I
have a little over $1200 to do in chrome work
to do yet
