I've never had a problem like this before and I can't dind anyone else who has had it. The 4 speed shifter linkage is scraping on the frame making it hard to go through the gears. Would bad motor mounts or trans mounts be the problem?

It's possible that it's the mounts, but it's also possible that the rods are installed wrong (upsidedown, perhaps).

If the trans mount lets the trans tailhousing sit too low it could cause that. twocents

I'm pretty sure it was a pistol grip hurst shifter. The guy took off the pistol grip and put on a hurst T-handle. I think it's the reverse rod that's scraping. It all just looks way to close to the frame - but I have no reference to know what it should look like. I've been doing other work on the car, so it's not in the best position to look at right now. Hopefully it will be running again in the next day or two and I can get it out of my cramped garage space so I can get under it to remove the trans mount.

I thought maybe it could be the rod upside down (can't see right now), but the guy I got it from and his brother are very mechanically inclined and I don't think they would do that.

This pic should give you an idea of what the shifter linkage looks like.

The 1st/2nd and 3rd/4th rods go through the shifter tunnel.
The reverse rod goes underneath the crossmember on an E=Body.

Another pic.

If the forward gear shift rods are dragging the crossmember it sounds like a sagged trans mount.

If the reverse rod doesn't go underneath the crossmember it's the wrong reverse rod and possibly the wrong shifter.

Had this happen on the Challenger. Replacing the transmission mount raised the tail-shaft and stopped the trans from popping out of gear.

Wish I took pics as I wonder what application that mount was for.

Thank you very much for that picture. The reverse rod does go under the crossmember and the forward rods are dragging on the part of the frame where the crossmember bolts to it. The exhaust is in the way, but it kinda looks like the bolt through part of the trans mount has slipped up to the top of the hole in the mount. Looks like that could be it and will confirm as soon as I get her out of the garage.

Thanks for the help everyone!

A stock type trans mount.

Polyurethane style.

Either way the bolt should go through the center.
If the bolt is going through the upper part the mount is bad.

Spend the extra $20 or whatever it is for the poly trans mount, the factory style rubber doesn't last very long (junk lol)

It was the trans mount that was collapsed. Changed it and no more scraping.

Thanks for the help again!

I was trying to describe that the center where the bolt goes through had moved to the top as the mount was broken.
