This past weekend I picked up the final peices to my next project 1972 Charger Rallye 440 4Spd. I was talking to the owner who ordered the Charger New in 1972. I asked, "why didn't you get the exhaust tips" He told me he couldn't? They were not available with the 440 4Spd option. He would of had to go with a 440 Auto or 400 4Spd if he wanted the exhasut tips. I thought that was interesting. I figured must be a sales man goof. Then on my ride home I remember my 1972 RR/GTX 440 4Spd. has no tips? Is this true? Any thoughts from the Moparts guru's.
Is this true, if you wanted a 440 4Spd B-Body in 1972 you did not have the option of getting exhaust tips? Any other survivor owners out there have a 1972 440 4Spd Body with no tips?

I have four 72 440 four speed STL built Road Runners on file. None code N42. The 440 automatics do. It appears that Windsor plant did not code N42 regardless of transmission.
Seeking:
1969 St. Louis plant VINs, SPD, and VONs. Over 2,000 thanks to you!

So someone give a good conjecture as to why they COULDN'T work with a 4-speed? Worked fine in '71... Although, 6-bbl. and Hemi had resonators... The only restriction I know of in '71 was N/A on the west coast due to 'noise'... Maybe that intensified in '72... Which leads to the next question... What about '73???

So someone give a good conjecture as to why they COULDN'T work with a 4-speed? The tips are probably a noise related restriction, Kalifornia banned them even with automatics. I've often wondered about those accessory restrictions too. Lots of them make no sense....like no A/C with the 440HP and 4-speed.

Easy answer to the last question. Nobody cares about any cars built after 1972.................................. ...

Lots of them make no sense....like no A/C with the 440HP and 4-speed. It's because Ma Mopar equipped them with 3.54 gears standard. Few cars during the era were available with AC and those gears. Same with GM. They did not want to warranty AC compressors with the higher RPM. So standard with AC was 3.08.

I bet it's not on your list.

Interesting.I have a 72 gtx 4-speed. I don't have tips either. Always thought they just weren't ordered. I don't recall ever seeing tips on a 440 72 car now that i think about it. Weird . I thought maybe in California You couldn't get tips.

Perhaps for a car you're thinking of, but not true as a blanket statement.
