I have a friend in BC that's fighting with a rear main leak in a 440...
I very sure that Chry never had a reverse rotation crank with the rear seal scallops going in the opposite direction to pass car engines. They all used rope seals.I know Ford and Chev had specific L/R rotation cranks but I'm unsure about the 440's.
Anyone know for a fact ????
It's a rear sump pan and I told him to baffle it to keep the oil away from the rear on excelleration...Something is overloading the rear seal and the reverse rotation seal surface is a very very very long shot...oil splashing to the rear on acceleration is the likely cause...
Anyone know or have an idea.

Any input would be muchly appreciated.

Rob

I have had 440 steel cranks with the things in the other direction--can cause a headache--you can polish the area smooth and the rubber seal will do fine--that is a rare problem but have been there done that in the past--I bet it is some other problem back there--the newest Fel Pro supplied rubbers are a tad shorter and don't stick up from the seal holder enough--PIA! Put the seal holder on a rod cap cutter, knock 010 off it and make sure the seal is protruding--you will be fine

I had a reverse rotation marine 440 before..and yes, the scallop marks went the other direction from a 'normal' 440..

I still have the cast aluminum oil pan and cast iron timing cover from it still

Him being in BC with all the water craft in that province it must be a marine crank...

I am curious if this was balanced?

The aluminum seal retainer could be cracked/broken from a, too long, pan
bolt having been installed.

I have no idea if it was balanced or not ...
The rear seal holder was checked for any cracks and it was machined flat...
I'll talk to him some time this morning and see how hes making out.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys..

Rob
