Trucks/vans only. Prior to '96 is RH, '96 and later is RE. RH is preferred for retrofits.

So what is the the nomenclature of the last rh?
The easy way to spot a RH is the pin count(not the neutral safety switch plug) but behind the shifter will be a plug.... you want either a 1 pin or a 3 pin.. the 7 pin is the electrical type that needs the computer.. the 1 pin is just OD and the 3 pin is OD and lock up

thats kinda what im looking at too. i figured the later od unit would be a better(refined) unit. front half being 727, that part is already proven. i was just tring to get an overdrive and lockup to live behind a bb
The lock up wont take WOT and the OD really shouldnt do it either but you can roll into it with no problem... I like it in my Rampage.. I pretty much just keep it in OD(I dont have lock up)

I did find out the valve bodys are the same So now I can take the next step interesting article> Turn your non lockup 518 into a lockup on the cheap http://www.dieseltruckresource.com/forum...p-cheap-318014/ Am wanting the 618 trans cause it has more clutches and straight cut gears. I have a 518 but it is lock up trans, need non lock up > 618, so that I can use a converter I have with anti-balloning plates and better stall I have an extra bell, but would rather use the one I added the shift linkage and kick-down mount

I changed my lock up to a non lock up.. just change the input shaft and the pump... that way I could put a high stall conv in.. I went with a 5000 stall I had

Hey Mike, I have a late 70s 727 lockup tranny that I took on trade that is freshly rebuilt but I would like to use a non lockup convertor I have. Can I just change the input shaft and pump on it and then use my converter? Thanks

Thats all I did... basically I changed the pump forward(pump and input shaft) I could get it cheaper that way then buying the parts EDIT The pump gears have a different tang on the 727 than the 518 lock up style... so I just bought the 727 stuff I see you said NON lock up... I'm not sure on the tangs on those gears but the 727 stuff does work

Thanks I will try that with this 727, that will save me getting a core rebuilt for the 440 I am putting in my street car.

Did you change the valve body?
I have a LU 518 want to change the converter to a 3500 non LU
Was going to pull the Non LU parts from a 618 but then thought to add a bell to it and change the governor weights ?
No... I kept the stock VB... the 618 VB has the diesel shift timing(LOW rpm).. all I changed was the pump and input shaft then did the trans go shift kit

Thats why I'm asking about the valve bodys
Gas vs diesel
Been told the bodys are the same only the governor weights are changed ????
I kept the stock 518 VB... but the Trans go shift kit does change a spring or two... works nice.. I had a issue of the governor sticking so it had to come out for a good cleaning
