Cuda_Mike OP super stock C Joined: Feb 2005 Posts: 720 Indiana	Recently busted the pinion gear in my Dana 60, never used pro gears in several years of racing, but I don't want another failure. Pros and cons? How long will pro gears last? Had 4.56 but had been planning to switch to 4.10's. 1.32 60' @ 3,200 lbs. Thanks for all input.

Are you running too many rpms at the traps to cause you to go with the 4.10s... I myself have never run a pro gear.. mainly due to it wasnt in my ratio.. so I cant help there

MRMOPAR622 top fuel M Joined: Sep 2003 Posts: 2,008 Sweet Home Alabama	Pro gears are softer,they don't break like a hard street gear,they are jut enough softer to cushion the shook at the hit making them better in a race-Car with slicks.But Pro gears being soft are not as good for the street because they will wear faster. PS I know no one wants to hear this but that is one of the advantages of running a 9" ford rear end you can get just about any gear ratio you want. Last edited by MRMOPAR622; 05/30/14 06:47 PM. 64dodge572 master 6 Joined: Jan 2003 Posts: 4,285 Ohio	I had about 650 runs on an all new Dana 60/4.56 pro gears, twisted an axle at that point, replaced both axles, about 20 passes later broke the ring/pinion. 2800# car running 5.50's 1/8" mile.

Yes you can but it can be expensive to do correctly. It was a trick stock racers did years ago. I had a set done probably late 80's or early 90's. I may have the original and after hardness somewhere, but I will have to look for it. The trick is that you need to harden the surfaces after tempering or else you have excessive wear. The outfit I had do mine did some sort of spray to surface harden the teeth. It was not very effective. After 75 runs, I inspected the gears had almost 100% tooth contact and the gears deformed to the point that the edges of the gears rolled over. I was cheap and cleaned the edges up and ran it for many years and many runs that way. Never got worse. Sold the rear end about 12 years ago - it never failed on me. My metallurgist says that what should of been done after the gears were softened is the root of the gears should of been masked and then the teeth hardened by carburizing. 67 Coronet 500 9.610 @ 139.20 mph 67 Coronet 500 (street car) 14.82 @ 94 mph 69 GTX (clone) - build in progress......
