Just had my 440/6 rebuilt and put several hundred miles on it and wanted inputs on best engine oil options and where to get it when I change the oil. The engine is a basic 440 build, 030 over and a mild cam, new headers, auto trans, with a new 4 row radiator. My engine builder recommends a good quality race oil, recommending 20w 50 for the summer and 10w 30 for the winter (though the car is parked during the winter months). What oil would meet my needs? Where do I get it? Do I order it and have it shipped to my home address or go to a parts store and get it.
Thanks!

This topic comes up a lot.

I'm no expert but I'd recommend Rotella T or Delo 400 LE. Both have fairly high levels of zinc to protect a flat tappet cam and are easy to find and not expensive.

I run it, my dad runs it, many here run this diesel oil no problems.

I personally think race oil would be money out the window for your engine. It sounds fairly mild. Even fairly wild engines are getting by with cheap diesel oil.

I use Valvoline 20/50. You can get it at most part stores.

I 2nd the diesel oil suggestion, modern day motor oil does not have the stuff a flat tappet cam needs.

Take care,

X2 on the Bradd Penn & your next decision will be how often you'll change it. I would checkout www.bobistheoilguy.com Valvoline delo rotella diesel oil & others are good as is using GM EOS as an additive & might checkout hughes engines for his take on it

I used to run 20w-50 in my Hemi car. It had awesome oil pressure, but the downside was the time it took the pressure to rise when started cold. I didn't like that.....a good 5 seconds for the guage to reach 85#.

So....to make the story short, the only vehicle out of the 5 I have that DOESN'T use 15W40 Rotella is my wifes 07 Charger 3.5 HO.

Makes the trip to the parts store simple !!!

LOL ! .....buy it by the 19 litre pail.....60 bucks. One heck of a lot cheaper than individual jugs.
I just usually stick some Comp #159 break-in stuff in with the oil when I service the race car.

I have been using 5W20Wt Valvoline non synthetic in all my Hi Po Mopar motors for a long time, the roller lifter motors get no additives, the flat lifter cam motors get a bottle of either zinc additive or Comp Cams lcam lube There have been horror storys posted on this site about deisel oil foaming, I have no expereince with that so I won't comment on it You need to think about what oil does for our motors, it needs to lubricate and cool That being said thinner oil moves quicker and with less resistance to the oil pump when cold, it also take less HP to turn the oil pump I've seen 10 HP loss at 130 F with straight 30 Wt oil years ago compared to the same oil and motor when we let the oil temps climb to 160 F No loss or gain of HP or torque when using 5W20Wt from 80F to 230 F I do run very loose oil clearances on the rod and main bearings also, .003 + on both I've shifted my 650 HP + pump gas street motor at or above 7000 RPM for a long time when running it at the track, a lot of laps over the years with no noticeable bearing wear or abuse OP, run what you feel comfortable with BTW, I do run both Rotella and Delo 400 in my CTD truck, depending on where and when I have the oil and filter changed and what they have in stock If you want to run race oil in your motor the only one I would run now is the RACING Pennzoil 25W50WT It has some lube additives, friction reduction, that no other oil has that I know of You can feel it when rubbing it between your fingers All the SCCA raers I know use it now

Is the Pennzoil 25W50WT available off the shelf or do you need to order it from a part store? What's the cost per Quart? Many people talk about Zinc content and I see normal commercial oils recommended, do they have a high enough Zinc content? Several people run diesel oil and have great luck, some worry the oil foams so that makes me stay away from diesel oil in my engine. I change my oil once per year due to working in Kuwait so my drive miles are very small per year. Thanks for your comments.

Do you order the oil direct from Brad Penn? Or order it from a parts store? What's the cost per quart? I've heard of BP products and the happy customers but have never used them.

Me too in a low deck stroker. Rotella T 15W40 gives me good oil pressure at hot idle and handles the moderately cool temps (mid 20's) I occasionally encounter in 3 season driving. I usually get it at Walmart.
