Do you know if the needle will pull straight off the head, or is there anything special I need to do to get it off? I'm thinking I'll just find a head that has a good needle and take it off for mine.
Thats what i was thinking. Just pop a different needle on. My 1980 has the same problem.

If the speedo went whacko and wrapped around breaking the needle, and now reads fast and doesn't drop all the way, I am thinking the magnet/spring (drum?) thing in the speedo gut has broken ... and you need another speedo. I have had that happen. Unless accuracy is not your goal, and if so, why worry about the needle? Yes, I believe the needle will pull off ...start with the broken one, you've got nothing to lose.
It takes gasoline to interest me.
