Without a lot more detail on the car, you don't know anything. This includes: 1. how big? a 273 will do that with a 240° cam, a 572 idles like a milk truck with a 260°. 2. how high was that idle? 600 RPM means no cam to speak of, 2,000 RPM means the wrong cam. 3. what converter?
Just my 2¢? What I heard was a bad idle and a loud exhaust. IME, a big cam does not have an irregular idle, but goes through identical up-&-down cycles of engine speed that take up to 1 second even at 1,200 RPM.
I'll give you another test: very early exhaust opening + high compression makes the exhaust REALLY loud at idle.

Just so everybody knows, Im just kidding around here.
But I am from the era of the 3/4 cams But hey now, where did the 7/8,s cams come into play.
I remember cruising McDonalds in the late 70,s, never heard of the 7/8,scams.
Those were some fun days, I miss them.
