Theres a guy with a 440 claimed to be a Factory Propane Motor that had extra webbing and a steel crank. Claims it weighs 200lbs mot than a normal 440. Any truth to this?

I've never heard of a 440 motor that Mopar made special for Propane use International Harvester did Propane has a lot less energy(BTU) per liquid gallon than the other commercial fuels out there, it does not make the power needed to have to spend money reinforcing the block, me thinks your guy is blowing smooke about this Maybe he is just ignorant and repeating something he was told BTW, Mopar, Dodge division, did make 440-3 motors for motorhomes and Dodge may have used some of them in the bigger trucks, I have had two of those motors, they do not weigh anymore than a standard complete 440 does The 361 and 413 industrial motors may have weighed a little more than the standard productions motor but not 200 lbs more Mopar did add additional reinforcing ribs on the outsides of all the passenger car 440 blocks built and used in or after 1969, I think it was

Propane X --- a 1969 Charger ---- campaigned in the day (1969 or 1970)to demonstrate the value of propane as motor fuel. The articles I read back then discussed the fuel delivery changes, not changes to the block, etc.

I have seen my share of BB's in MH's ....and I have never seen a diff between a regular 440 block and one that is in a MH. The 413 now is a diff story.

When you consider a 440 bare block weighs roughly 225 pounds, this one is supposed to weigh almost twice as much? Umm, I don't think so.

He claims to have done his research and says its legitimately. I mentioned the Propane was probably an aftermarket add on just like the Turbo kits offered. I'll see if he can get me pics

My new unmachnied World Products cast iron race block with 4 4 bolt mains weighs 320 lbs, the Koleno high nickel block with all five main bearings having 4 bolt mains weigh just about the same as the World block, maybe 5 to 10 lbs more A stock 440 block weighs bewteen 205 to 220 lbs depening on the machine work done to it and how much gunk is in the water passages and what year the block is, trust me on that I've weigh a bunch of the 440 and 400 blcoks looking of the best ones to use as a race motor build, the new aftermarket blocks are the best choice Me thinks he is trying to sell you what he has

I had a 1973 440-3 motorhome motor that had a forged steel crank with 6 pak rods Mopar started using the cast steel cranks in some of the automatic cars in 1972 or 1973

Cab I had the same motor When flipped upside down one would swear it was a 413 Industrial like the others it sat with because of the rotating assembly

I believe there were some motorhome 440's that used different heads that were quite a bit bigger than standard 440 heads and a different water pump.. I believe they had ports on the heads that the water pump bolted to.. it has been about since I seen this engine but IIRC it was a 440 from a 73 motor home and the guy wanted big bucks for it because he thought it was something special.

That's the industrial 413. Very common in motorhomes up until the early 70's.

As already pointed out by Viperblue, some of the 1973 Class A motorhomes where built on 1972 chassis with the industrial 413-3 motors, not the 440 or 440-3 motors. The 440 motorhome motors used the standard 440 head castings with better valves and some(the 440-3)had additional coolant passages around the exhaust ports and seats
