Would a 600 Eddy or 625 Carter be too small for a 440?

I've ran a few 600 edelbrocks on 440s that were mostly stock other than headers and a summit cam.
Great response and mpg, I got no complaints.
I prefer a TQ but people keep selling me edelbrocks for less than what a TQ rebuild kit costs.

Wasn't the factory Carter AVS used on 440 Magnum engines a 580 CFM ? The 340 used a 480 CFM. No wonder they made more power when a Holley 750 was swapped on !

I was told that All Mopar engines run better with smaller carbsquare. Same guy said a 650 was too big for a 318. Important not looking to make power. Its a W200 Clubcab Longbox. Has Headers on it. Better Mileage would be Sweet lol

Nope, Scott can probably add more, but the 440 HP AVS was a 750 and the 340 ran a 625...

The Lo Po BB got the smaller Holley vacune secondary carbs.

You're the carb expert, you tell us.

In case/when Yuck gets it wrong. Yes it will work fine.

Max carb size is only relevant for max HP/RPM efforts. You are almost always better off choosing a smaller carb than a larger one.

I had a Carter comp series 625 on a mostly stock 67 GTX (CH4B intake and small cam) it ran good. 13.86 thru the logs 2 1/4 exhaust, 3.55's on BFG's.. loved that car.

A Holley 1850 is, and always has been, a 600 cfm carb.

A Holley 1850 was never stock on any Chrysler engine. There were other Holleys that filled that role.

For optimum performance it is on the small side, for general street use it will be fine and have good torque, high velocity and excellent throttle response.

Smaller is usually better on a street cruiser. On my 5.9/360 in the Duster it would pull a vacuum at WOT with a 625 cfm though which is a good indication it was undercarb'd.

Was as I now have a 750 on it.

If you have the 600/625 run it, won't cost you anything or hurt anything and you can always upgrade later if looking for "more"

Did a little impromptu testing on my 87 Diplomat, 360, A833, 2.94 rear.

Ran an Ebrock 600 and an Ebrock 750. Numberswise, the smaller carb netted me low 20's for mileage and topped out at 115 mph. Larger carb netted me high teens for mileage and would peg the 125 mph cop speedo.

For the intangibles, the smaller carb felt more responsive, the larger felt somewhat lazy in comparison.

I did not optimize the tunes either, I might have picked a bit up but who knows. Since I did not regularly haul around at 115+ and was commuting 75 miles each way to work I kept the smaller carb on the engine. But that engine was not setup for high rpm running anyway. Comp XE262 cam, Performer intake, 302 heads, stock 3 cat exhaust.

Good stuff (especially the "more responsive") . OP, it sounds like you have a 600/625 on hand, run it & go from there

Nope......

Heck, A 440 can even run on a 2 barrel, but it wont make optimum power..GM understood this as most of their big inch motors had 800 cfm Q jets (and performance cars had 780 Holleys)..Heck they even put a 780 on a dinky 302 Z28!

Dont believe me?

Take a stone stock 440HP 4V...Take off that crappy little AVS and bolt on a "new" 800CFM Edelbrock Thunder Series AVS and make no other mods...Night and day difference

Thanks forth responses. Its a W200 Clubcab. has the factory carb but visually can see its wet just sitting. I have an eddy 600 and a Carter 625. Hp383 Will be tossing a kit in one for me. It will be driven at least 60 miles a day if it gets ok mileage bit granted Most all 70s W200s had 4 1 gears. I'll save up for a 750 as the truck may end up a parts etc hauler

I used to have a mild (stock) rebuilt '69 440
in a C body Chrysler. The cam was the Mopar
.455 lift hydralic,stock 906 heads with just a 3 angle valve job, 1-7/8 headers,CH4B intake,
and a Carter 625 4 bbl. The car would fall flat
in the upper (5,000) rpm range and run out of steam.

I went back in it a year later, changed to the
.509 cam, put a Holley 3310 750 4bbl on it, and it was a completely different car! Took it to
a local track and did a best of 14.10 @101mph
After that I always stuck with the Holley.

Its a truck so it probably won't see bit maybe 4000rpm. Im just leary of spending the cash to have hp go Through the stock carb and the body be warped or end of cracking. Im sure I'll upsized to a 750 later
