IIRC theres a conversion wiring kit thats is used on GM pickups to do something like that .. I cant see why it wouldnt work on our trucks.. You could always add some road lights aswell..

I am adding off road lights on the roof, but sometimes the local LE gets a bit picky about those. A few guys have been getting tickets for not having covers over their lights while on road.

I'm wondering if both beams lit at the same time would actually be brighter, it possibly will only be as bright as the high beam by itself.

I don't know that it would actually be "that much" brighter. I, myself, added another set of lights to my car. Just be aware, local LE sometimes gets "picky" if you have more than 4 forward beams lit (in total, I have 8 forward beams, or 4 pair on my Subaru). In GA, they don't care, but I was driving in the NE and got asked about it. Uploaded with ImageShack.us

I know with my 92 Dakota, it has the dimmer on the column. If I pull back on the dimmer, and hold it, I get both low and high beams simultaneously, and it is much brighter than just the high beams.
I dont do that often, or for more than a few seconds when looking out for critters, because I dont want to melt anything.
It sure would be nice to get all the light to the front as possible, but I want to do it without hurting the system, wires, or me.

Remember that an 86 Ramcharger has a single glass bulb on each side. Lighting both elements inside that bulb will likely overheat the bulb itself as well as the plastic adjusting clips and the wire harness. You have three leads going to those bulbs. Power to the low beam, power to the high beam, and a ground that serves both beams. Feeding the power shouldn't hurt the feeds but that ground wire will be smoking.
Not a good idea.

Daniel Stern Lighting will likely set you up. I agree the stock wiring will need upgrading, yet by installing a relay circuit and head lamp upgrade you will probably find you do not need both elements 'on' at the same time.

Get a nice set of off-road lights, trust me, they can be had second hand rather inexpensively. I ran into the same situation on my '93 truck years back, a couple 8" Bosch lights w/ 100-watt bulbs solved it! I love messing with lighting, I "improve" it on every car I own!
