I've heard that the MP orange electronic ignition boxes have been known to have issues. What at the symptoms?
I may be having one act up but not sure.

I've had several over the last 25 years and only one gave me any problems; the gel melted. Completely stock 383 '69 RR, only upgraded the ignition. About 1996. Box was away from exhaust, just got "lucky". Actually the car started & ran but I caught it before it failed. I have another that's been fine since 1988.

Im not sure what year the problem started, but at one time hwy were pretty decent. They changes where they were manufactured and the quality went away.
Usually the either die completely,or have intermittent starting issues.

I am having a situation where the car starts and runs fine most of the time, but sometimes once it's hot, it runs rough off idle and will sometimes quit and not restart. Then once it cools it's fine. Brand new orange box and conversion. No baseline to compare to since it's a brand new build. I suspect it's the box.
I don't usually run the orange box but did this time. I'm still
trouble shooting and will investigate it further tomorrow

once you get it sorted out you will find out eventually that you are not making the power you should , above 4000 rpm the box retards timing. This was probably not a problem with the original distributors included in the kits because they have roughly 30 degrees of mechanical, but it is definitely a problem with the current Mallory based distributor, especially if the end user limits the amount of mechanical advance is in the distributor.

I showed some dyno results on here before showing that the chrome and orange boxes both retarded timing around4000 rpm.
I tested with M.P.,Accel,and a Mallory and they all did the same. The N.P. boxes just cant handle the dwell. Its not a big deal for the average stock driver. For what its worth,I have two Orange boxes from the 80's and they pull timing too,the reliability is the main issue with newer units.

I remember something about the electronic ignition ECU units being tested in a Mopar Muscle article. A company was touting the benefits of their aftermarket box that supposedly had a new twist on the classic Mopar design. I seem to remember that their unit did not retard timing at any point. It had a built in rev limiter too.
I've read and heard that these units need to be kept as cool as possible. I've seen them mounted directly to firewalls and inner fenders, but I've been told that it is better to mount them with at least a quarter inch air gap to allow air to pass behind them.

I removed my orange box, had starting issues and idle quality as well as the power above 4k.The box you are talking about is the Renovator.

I have it mounted to the firewall and I have had no problems with it so far.
Very happy!

Orange box is as reliable as a 1990 Grand Prix. Keep your walking shoes in the car.

I think you mean the Rev-n-nator.

Not if you have a mid 90's or earlier, when they changed vendors that's when the problem started.

I had one in the early 80's , never left me stranded , but the accel dual point I swapped out for the electronic conversion ran better

The only time I've had one die was because I left the key in the run position overnight.

There was a thread on here a few months ago on how to repair a dead orange box.
