In the process of removing a 40+ year-old brake line fitting from the distribution block, I chewed it up with my vice grips. The line itself (unfortunately, the one which runs to the rear brakes) is not damaged and the threaded part of the fitting looks fine (see pic). What are my options?

- Can I just re-install it, using the vice grips?
- Should I try to cut the line, put a new fitting on, and re-flare it?
- Or do I need to replace the entire line?

Any suggestions would be much appreciated, thanks!

Roger

restoring it?

Replace the whole line.

Driver and not messing with it again for another 5-10 years?

re-install it, using the vice grips.

As soon as you started having problems with removing the fitting you should have stopped, and got the right tool.

Actually you should of got the right tool to do the job to start with.

Allen Here's a novel idea, let's not throw a bunch of parts at the car hoping it will fix the problem and instead spend a little time diagnosing it first. Life was a little easier when I was just a wrench.

Yeah, I was afraid this would happen. But I had no idea there was a special tool for this - what is it?

No, it's not a restoration, and I don't have a problem putting this fitting back on as long as there's no safety issue.

Line/flare wrench, problem is for the occasional user the right tools are not cheap. Especially if you won’t use the set again for another 5 years. But it may be worth buying Ebay stuff and reselling afterwards.

Even then there is no guarantee with a 30+ year old car

The right tool is a line wrench, AKA a "Flare nut" wrench. Basically an six point box end wrench with an opening large enough to slip past the line. Gives additional gripping surface over just an open end wrench. Never use vise grips.

Yea---like he posted above!

Should be a basic 3/16th line, no biggie, get a new piece from the local parts store, or just re-use it as long as it dont leak.
