71 cuda street car all steel except the hood and front bumper. 440 .030 kb hyper pistons a little bit in the hole, ported 346 heads with 2.14 1.81 valves mp .557 solid cam crane iron rockers m1 single plane 800 cfm carb, 1 7/8 hookers 2 1/2" x pipe aero chamber muffler out the back, 3000 stall manual valvebody 3.91 gear 325 50 et street radial. car went 7.66 in the 1/8th at 89mph with a 1.69 60'. thinking about adding cal tracs since that was the one time the car actually hooked. i feel like the car should be faster but i was hitting high gear right at the lights. should i be expecting more? any tips to shave a tenth or 2?

Your increments are right in line with the wallace calc. Shows a 12.14 at 109 mph !/4 mile.
Your exhausts are way too small, there's at least 2/10 there.
A friend of mine had 383 Satellite, reasonable sized solid cam, ported stock heads. Ran best 12.8
He uncorked the 2.5" exhaust went 12.4 same day.

Open the exhaust, run a long collector (12 to 18 inch), and tighten the lash to .016 and see what happens!

What does it weigh? Seems like that combo should go 11.70s or so and even less with a better converter. I agree open the exhaust and see what happens.

Un-cap it and you'll pick up 1.5 in the 1/8 maybe more. Also play with the air pressure in your tires. It's your 1st time out, be glad you got some runs in and nothing broke.

Your 60 isnt that far off, IMO. But, it is off a little.

Trust me...work on the front end first, then add Cal Tracs later, if you need to. Cal Tracs are nothing magical by themselves. If the front doesnt allow weight transfer or the rear unloads too fast because of the front...Cal tracs will do nothing for you.

With a good 'Vert your combo should go mid 11s with ease....As mentioned should go 11.70ish at it sits.

Who's converter ?
I'd like to see a little quicker based on your 60'.
Our last effort 60'ed between 1.59 - 1.61 and the 1/8th times were 7 - teens to low .20's.

His 60 isn't far off .05 at most I think, the converter isn't that big, and the car is probably pretty heavy. Also sounds like more of a street car than a dedicated racecar. Cal Tracs and freeing up front suspension travel will help in the traction department.

Good luck with it.

Converter, cal tracs are for quitters IMO, I've been much faster hooking much harder without them.

Thats just like my old combo that was in my 3700 lb 63. It had a basic .030 over 440 with stock rods and KB quench pad pitons. Had 906 heads and the MP.557 cam. Holley Street Dominator intake and an 850 DP. Used Hedman 1-3/4 headers and 3" exh. Has 4.30's on a 30 x 9 tire. Best et was 7.28 and 11.49 @ 116. My best 60 was a 1.58 but it normally 60 in the low 1.60's. Thats where you are loosing some et. I just used SS springs but Caltracs work great when you get them dailed in. Ron

its not my first time racing just the first time with this combo. it is a street car no doubt. the converter is an old ger i know alot of people don't like them but this one has been trouble free for years. thats not saying it is the best though. the car has no sway bar it picks the front end up really good when it does hook decently. next time i will trailer it there instead of driving it the hour and a half. i was fighting vapor lock a good bit of the day and the ride home wasn't any better. i would love to have a 4.30 gear with these big tires i knew they had killed my gear because it drops off a little to much when i hit high gear.

I respectfully suggest that they never made a good converter.
And I did have one for a number of years.
It 60'ed O.K. , but left a lot on the track.
A real converter will get you the most bang for the buck in my opinion.........irrespective of what our friend from Janesville might say.

Let's try this approach. What's the front suspension like?

In case I wasn't clear before I was stating two different thoughts earlier. I think it needs a real converter (1) and Xal Tracs I think are for quitters (2) mainly on cars at this performance level. I go quite a bit quicker on SS springs with my little grudge car and plant hard enough to lift the fronts on and off track with a 367 full weight street car.

front suspension is all replacement stock parts, poly bushings, no swaybar never had one, factory 318 torsion bars and 14 year old cheap parts store shocks. 73 up a body discs with pin calipers, 6" wheels with 165-80 tires. the rear has subframe connectors, espo 1" drop springs, dr diff relocators, b body rear, qa1 single adjustment shocks, 10" wheels and pinion snubber a little over an inch from the floor.

i do drive the car on the street but i don't expect it to have a c body ride and still hook so i am open to about anything except back halfing it with ladder bars. in other words i want it to hook and run hard first, how good it rides is a distant second!

How much front end travel? How loose are the front shocks?

IMO, snubbers=a nice door stop.

Cool. No harm , no foul.
For the performance level you are at ( O.P. ), I think ladder bars is gross overkill.
I am using S/S springs on my deal.....no snubber and decent shocks.
I should be making laps this spring after a major re-do , so we'll see how it works.
But you are right......guys have gone awful fast on them.

i wouldn't even think of putting ladder bars on the car i was just saying my limit is that point. the way it picks the frontend up when it does hook i would say it is pretty loose. i need to get a video of it leaving! would getting new upper bumpstops and maybe shimming them up to limit the front travel help? i am not impressed with the snubber either its just there as low as the car is it isn't much higher than a stock snubber i had to cut the adjustment part of it way down so the car wasn't sitting on it while at rest. the springs are brand new under the car now so new springs aren't in the cards plus with the way they jack the rearend up just doesn't work for me. thats why i was gonna get caltracs since they are a bolt on. although i know they work best with the mono leafs. where should i start with shock adjustment? i think they are at 4 clicks now. which makes the car kinda stiff driving it.
