The next series of 3 pictures is of the baffle I adding into the rear of the sump. I wanted to make sure the oil stayed in the sump area during launch at the track. It doesn’t have to be completely tight and welded all around as long as you are providing some oil control. Again, I have never experienced 0 oil pressure at the race track with this arrangement.

… and 3rd. As you can see, I also placed the pickup at the rear of the sump. This aids in picking up oil on launch. I hope this helps.

Hey guys , I don't want to hijack the post but can you purchase the sump in the pan and oil line and the Milodon pump cover as a kit ? If so where ? I have been wanting to have the external set up like this but never pursued it . Gary

I believe it is still available as a kit although it uses the old style pump cover that has the gasket issue that Garth mentioned. Here's a link to the kit at Summit.

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/mil-21010/overview/year/1970/make/dodge/model/charger

The new style cover Milodon offers is a one piece unit that does not have the gasket problem but it does not come with the pickup, lines and fittings. Here's a link to that cover.

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/mil-21215/overview/year/1970/make/dodge/model/charger

There are others who make the one piece pump cover as well and Milodon sells their pickup seperately as well here:

The lines and fittings are all standard -10 AN braided line available most anywhere.

Gary,
The #21010 system kit now comes with the new one piece pump cover. I got mine from Jegs and they said they don't have any of the older 2 piece covers left.

Garth & Rick, that is some great documentation! I thought I was the only one who took a bunch of step by step photos of everything seeing the pics make it much easier to understand

Garth, the modified fitting coming out of the pump cover would be my biggest problem...That is some awesome skill cutting and welding up that fitting I don't have that skill and not sure any of my friends do either.

Rick, the tubing you used, is it welded or soldered?

Also, question for all: Are you using the "O" ring at the connection/fitting at the pan or a gasket of some sort...or both?

Gary, This is what came in the kit plus the pick up/sump for the pan. The pump was extra.

66er - Any chance you might be able to take a few pics of your set up?

Because the pickup and fitting are not pipe thread you need sealant on the threads. You need the o ring between the pickup and pan to prevent seepage. The big washer is just there as support for the thin sheet metal of the pan.

Bill, the fitting was not too bad to make. I just cut out a V from a 90 and filed it by hand until it lined up with the opening in the cross member. A friend of mine did the TIG welding. Remember, this is under suction, not pressure.

I remember having to fiddle with the pickup. I forget how I did this. Now you understand why I have some many pictures. LOL. My best recollection was I discarded the o-ring. I used an aluminum washer on the outside of the pan. I had a friend thread it to better align it on the fitting but that is not necessary. Then I used silicone on either side of the sump wall to seal.

Garth

The tubing is welded. I don't think soldering would hold in this application. It was fabricated from two 90 degree Aeroquip adapters.

As for the fitting in the pan, I used a washer kit from Doty manufacturing that is made specifically for this application. It is a large aluminum washer that is relieved for an "O" ring on the inner circumference.

Garth's method or mine each require some welding although it is minor and any welding shop would likely do it for a minimal charge. I would think that a longer piece of braided steel line could be looped under the oil filter in place of the steel line I used and would eliminate any welding but the line would have to be supported so it doesn't rub somewhere.

I finally had a chance to get some things mocked up and after messing with it a bit I think I might go this way with it. Thoughts?
