Hey gang.. I think I know the problem, but it isn't real clear. I'm putting the front suspension back together with new ball joints, bushings, tie-rods, etc... Now, all of a sudden, the drag link is rubbing against the oil pan ( obviously, it wasn't doing this before ). The same pitman and idler arm are back in the car, so the geometry should be the same. The drag link should be positioned in space with the drag link and idler arm. But, I may have the lower control arm one hex-side off on the torsion bar. I believe the lower control arm needs to swing up one more hex position. Maybe a fresh set of eyes will see something that's obvious for I'm getting tired at this hour.... And yes, I painted the lower control arms black... , next time I do the car, it'll get the "cosmoline" treatment....... Thanks in advance... Troy

Do you still have the old tie rod end etc that were replaced so you can compare them?

Yeap and they look pretty close to each other. I know the space between the pan and the drag link are already close, but not rubbing-close....

That's what my understanding is, thanks for the reassurance. Now, I do believe the drag link is in properly, it's curved part is facing down and aft.... I can't image it is in backwards.. But, I will take it out and test fit it again....

Try turning the centerlink around.
But to clarify, you just did the suspension repair you listed above? No motor mount, trans mount, steering box, or anything else?

I pulled the steering box and had it serviced. It's the same box with the same output shaft and all. I once had a drag link in backwards, but could have sworn in was much more obvious at being backwards.....

The steering box would have to have be tilted up somehow. Or the spline shaft moved up significantly (IIRC, not posible).
Could something be holding the steering box from being tightened/mated completely to the steering box pad on the K-member? Debris or something stuck in there?
Or the weld nuts in the K-member stripped badly. That does happen.
Check by trying to slip a feeler gauge or something thin between each 3 steering box bolts and K-member. Might be tough as hell to do though with the limite room in there.
On an aside: I've actually got a steering box not to mount properly before. I went overboard with the bracing when reinforcing a K-member. Fixed it by

The steering box is in fine. Anyone have a picture of the draglink installed with the motor in the car? I could have sworn the service manual illustrated the draglink's bend going aft, not forward...

Could you just look at you Daytona for reference?

The Daytona's the issue. I can use the 500 for reference.. In all honesty, I think the oil pan that's on the motor is a C-body pan. The clearance was always close and the 500 is real close too. I know for a fact the 500 has a '69 New Yorker 440 in it ( pulled straight out of the New Yorker into the 500. ). I'm going to go get the 3-digit number off the bottom of the pan, maybe that will shine some light on the issue. If it is the wrong pan, time for me to get proper one....

I believe I have the culprit... I have a 187 pan on my Daytona, hence a 2.02" depth pan whereas the 402 I'm suppose to have is a 1.56" depth pan... I believe that's my culprit. I put everything back to what it was before. Apparently my tolerances were a lot closer than I remembered, didn't really pay no mind to it before since it worked. Maybe the draglink was backwards and cleared. Regardless, I'm going to put it the proper way. I'll remove the draglink, get a proper pan and put it all back together again. Thus, making the Daytona even "more correct"... The life these old cars go through. The previous owner apparently didn't have a 402 pan laying around when they built this 69 440 for the Daytona when they yanked the 426 Hemi that was in it when it came back from England...

the "187" stamping, verifying it is indeed a C-body pan... Now the quest to get a 402 pan... Maybe I have that ole' Hemi pan laying around I can use for barter....
Thanks Charlie, your link was the key to understanding.....

While the 402 is correct I'd use a Repo Hemi pan with the larger sump... Better yet Milodon makes a repo Hemi pan that when painted looks nearly correct but to nice as their stamping dies are better plus their welds are TIG instead of spot welds so the baffles are more secure...

Well, guess what....... I have to start going up into my attic more to see my Mopar stash... Pull this down. I need a 402 oil and what I believe I found is a '70-'71 426 Hemi oil pan.... I'll see if I can trade it for 2 "402" pans....
