Among other things, trashed my small sector power steering gear box when I couldn't miss a spinning car. Had a large sector reman box and pitman sitting on shelf, so put it in car. Now, the car steers way too far to the left and not far enough to the right. What are we missing which is different between small sector shaft steering components and large shaft components? Is there something we need to change or should we just find a small sector box?

Sounds like the pitman arm wasn't installed with the steering gear box and wheels centered.

That's what we thought first, tried it several times, same result. Large sector pitman indexes only 2 ways, original pitman clocked 4 ways. Seems like something else is different between the two series (small v. large sector).

Maybe wrong pitman? I know the C-body pitmans are clocked differently. They are longer too.

File out the clocking teeth and install it where you need it. Problem solved.

Use the C-body centerlink, it will move the pitman closer to the center of the car. The clocking is different because the C-body center to center distance is less than a b-body between the pitman and idler. TIm

If the pot connector is assembled 180 deg out of phase, it will favor one side. Try pulling apart the pot and re-assembling 180 degrees opposite.

No pot connector used. As currently "fixed," can only get about 2.5 turns of steering wheel, on left turn tire hits frame rail. Still mystified.

Just changing from small sector to large shouldn't cause the problem. I made the swap on a '70E when I got my box rebuilt. There is some other difference. If you are not using a pot do you have a U joint? Is it possible to clock the U joint or assemble 180 degrees different?

I agree that the difference in sector shafts alone wouldn't make the difference. But, with the larger sector and only 2 clocking positions, we can't get the thing to line up. And can't figure out why..... Is there enough adjustment in the centering valve to correct this? That's the only thing we haven't tried....

I was thinking centering valve when I read this the other day but couldn't figure out the name. I think the FSM has instructions. Mike

Did you check the entire front end out? If the pitman arm is clocked right then something has got to be bent? Check where the ball joint hits the LCA etc..?

Apparently, at some point the steering has been modified or customized. The pitman which came with the large sector steering box was different (longer) than the original pitman. It simply would not fit correctly with the existing steering setup. So, we are are going with the original pitman with a small sector firm feel rebuilt box. Will let you know what happens.

Just a thought.... are you sure it's not a quick ratio arm? I have one from Firm Feel and you can clock it it any position ( no master splines)

I think it could be a C-body arm. Some have splines that are clocked a lot different.
