Depends on how high you want the shift point. It is possible to get a combination of governor parts that won't allow a shift before the engine's rpm limit..AMHIK.

How high of a shift point are you looking for? A&A's governors have always worked well for me. Although there is usually a split between the 1-2 and the 2-3 shifts.

I've had good success drilling the inner weight .375" dia .375" deep. I take about .200 off the outer weight leaving the original diameter about .100" from each end. This has resulted in 5600-5900 shift. Not rocket science but it has worked.

The hp governor from the late 60s is a good starting point IMO. With near std line pressure, it should shift around 5200 to 5400. Then by drilling the inner weight you can get that governor to shift up to about 5800 to 6000 without messing with the springs. You'll then need to play with the 1-2 shift spring, more than likely, to get the 1-2 and 2-3 shift where you want them both.

dvw, that is about what I got too: 3/8" dia. x 3/8" deep....starting with a hp governor shift about 5800 w/ slightly increased line pressure too.

If you get the governor set up where you like it using modified stock pieces or buying A&A pieces, and the two shift points don't match, call Rick at A&A. He can set you up with a 1-2 shift valve spring to bring it up to match the 2-3 shift or the other way around.

That is a good place to start, but there is about 600 to 800 rpm difference between Rick's two springs. They are probably perfect for some applications, but I ended up buying a half dozen springs to get what I needed for mine.

I agree that my method had different shift rpm for the 1/2 and the 2/3 with the stock spring. Where did you get all the different springs?

I usually set the 2-3 lower than the 1-2 shift and adjust the governor to shift the 1-2 where I want it. That way I can launch with the selector in 2 and not have to concern myself with that quick shift. Then there is plenty of time to manual the 2-3 higher than the auto shift point that is probably too low.

I have not had any luck with A&A's split shift springs getting the 2 shift points close enough to work for me.

I have done that same thing in the past. This time I set it up to have both gear changes automatic. So with that I set the governor to shift 2-3 where I wanted and changed the 1-2 shift spring to tune that shift point.
