I doubt the MSD is firing at 8 volts while cranking. I would suggest charging the battery, checking for spark by pulling one of the plug wires and install a spare plug in it and resting it on a bare portion of the engine or frame and note if there is a spark when cranking. Gotta have air, fuel, compression and spark to make it all happen.

The starter sounds like its drawing alot of amps.. but if you have spark at the plugs it should still fire... have you pumped the throttle on the carb to see if your getting fuel(and smell it to make sure its gas)... if need be spray some starter fluid in it to see if it hits

You said you dont smell gas... if you've been cranking it that much you SHOULD be flooded... but you still dont smell gas... sounds like its old fuel

Mr_P_Body-yes plenty of fuel. Mini starter is over 16 yrs old tho. Car had sat for 9 months.
While you'd like to see more than 8 w/ MSD I'm going to bet your gas is bad. Unless you used some gas stabilizer it's done. If you still have the stock or metal tank you probably have water in the mix too. I'd drain the tank and clean the line out. You can try and gravity feed the carb from a can of new gas to see if that's the problem before you go thru it all.

Mr Yuck/Mr P Body...drained cell and cleaned..replaced fuel with 100 octane from Delta Sonic(it was closer). Possible bad gas from station? Do you thimk the starter is an issue? Car started fine before put away. Just concerned when push start button voltage drops to 8v. Thank you for your help!

Yes I would think its drawing a LOT of amps... that is pulling power away from the ignition.. I would have a charger on it or jumper cables when trying to start it.... when you checked spark was it a nice blue color or yellow

Mr P Body- yellow-orangish on ign tester. Have had charger and have had fresh booster battery...still drops to 8v at cranking.
Sounds like your starter is bad... drawing way too many amps and its slow cranking... like I said... that is pulling power from the ignition... you can do a draw test if you have a big amp gauge OR pull it off and have a parts store test it

Check your battery connections. Sounds like the only thing that has changed is you removed the battery. They may look fine on the outside but bad on the inside. Are the cables hot when you crank it over?
