Hey Guys,
I'm trying to set up a USED 3.23 gear in my 8 3/4". It's a 489 case with the crush sleeve eliminator. Right now backlash is set at .009" (I know... little loose) because that seemed to give me the best pattern.

Check out the pattern I have. If you look on the drive side, it looks like the pinion is a little to close (pattern shows tip diving into root of gear as it gets towards the heel).

But if I look at the coast side, it looks like the pinion is a little too far away (Tip of pattern is diving away from the root as it gets towards the toe).

If I try to move the pinion in one way or the other, it just makes the coast better and the drive side worst, or the other way around. It never seems to bring both in line.

To get the picture I applied pressure to the ring gear (via screw driver) when I rolled it over to make sure it had some drag on it to get a good reading.
Any thoughts?

More pinion shims to move it back into the teeth, then adjust lash and contact pattern?

I'm not trying to be difficult, it comes naturally....

Well if I move the pinion closer, it just makes the drive side into the root further, and makes the coast side fall off the gear worse at the same time.

This is sort of a happy medium...

looks like inadequate pinion depth, and too much lash.

You may want to try to open the backlash up some more. Used gears wear and are usually around .011-.013 Had to redo my 8 3/4 set due to a bad pinion bearing and my best gear pattern was when my final backlash was set at .015......

Inadequate pinion depth meaning it's too deep or not deep enough?

From the drive side, my uneducated opinion is that I can't go too much deeper because it'll be in the root of the ring gear tooth?

Could you explain why you think that?

Opened up the backlash to .012" Drive side looks better, but coast side looks the same.

From what I understand, if there is a pinion depth problem, shouldn't the patterns be opposite of eachother?

For example, if the drive side is down at the toe and falling into the heel, wouldn't the coast side show that it would be falling away towards the tip?

In this case, both patterns are falling into the root?

more pinion depth would move the pinion toward the front of the car.

See if this dont help some.

I would take some shim out as to move the pinion towards the front of the car. It should set the drive side deeper and then you will have to set backlash from there to see where the cost pattern comes out. Good luck , Ron

Set the drive side up to where it's best and let the coast side be, if it's noisy on coast so what You are probably gonna have some noise with used gears and under power you want the teeth to mesh best

Used gears usually set up better between .008"-.010" backlash.

Also for used gears concentrate on the coast side. Trying to chase it from the drive side can become extremely frustrating-just went through this with my Dana.
