Had fun with our new 418 last summer but at the end cracked #5 cyl. lot of $ in block prep as you know this, if all other cyl.sona check good would you sleeve # 5 and go with it, it is not all out race, street with a few weekends at the track, maybe 500hp 10.3comp. 40overbore, kinda hate to wast a lot of machine work already done but what do we think? sleeve and go or step back and punt? thanks.

You could sonic check the block first and see if it is worth saving. Sleeving isn't that cheap because it usually distorts the adjacent cylinders, so they have to be honed with a torque plate, decked, etc. Cheaper that prepping a new block though.

you know that is what i wanted to hear, RIGHT!

I know I did , you already had it set in your mind what you wanted to d oand was looking for someone to agree.

That said I would sleeve the block , even if you have to do a couple more holes after the sonic check.

Sleeve it. I have 2 sleeves in my 499 going on 8 years now. Nothing wrong with them as long as they are done right.

Sleeve is good do it! One of the best drag engines I ever had --small block--had one --done right by experienced hand they are NO issue--wish other fixes were as simple and effective--really! Sleeve it , forget it, race the crud out of it!!

If all 8 cylinders were sleeved? Probably the safest thing to do. But, a sleeve does not necessarily knock the deck out of plane.

my machine shop did 2 sleeves for me. I had cracked a cylinder on a .060 over 383 stroker. the FIRST and FIRED machine shop told me that it needed .060 to clean up, so I asked "did you check it? can it go .060?" they said "oh yea, it's good to go"

being my first build, I didn't think to ask for the sonic check sheet.

Anyway, 200 miles into it, it cracked a cylinder, so I went to my new machine shop and had them sonic check it. one other cylinder was thin besides the cracked one. Had them sleeve both holes, because 2 sleeves were cheaper than another $800 in block prep for a new block.

they told me they "kiss" the decks after the job to be sure that everything is flat and true again. only cut .005 off, basically enough to ensure the sleeve is even with the deck so that you don't run into head gasket sealing issues.

By the way, after fixing the block with sleeves, rebuilding the engine, this time with eddy heads, it made 505 hp 535 tq, and I've got 4,000 street miles on it.

no problems!
