Bought a 99 Dakota with a 3.9 v6. clean little truck, but it needs a motor.now my question is the guy said it locked up going down the road. no holes in the block, but you aint moving the crank--tried with a bar. So what would have done this?havent pulled it yet, may just sell like it is, dont have time.unless someone feels its a easy job and possible easy fix in the motor. So what do you think guys?

Severe loss of coolant ? ... maybe the bores are full of it. PULL all the plugs then try barring it over.

Spun bearings... due to lack of oil

Pickup probably clogged with sludge and starved the oil pump. My parents bought a used 96 dak with the 3.9 and it did the same thing. My dad shut it down when the lifters bled down on the highway and started clacking away. Had to pull the pan, remove the pickup and clean everything out. Pulled the valve covers and they were full of sludge too.

had a moderately severe tapping in a /6, assumed it was a TC bolt loose as I had that before. Several days of driving later it just locked solid going down the road. I'm assuming it was a rod bearing & it finally threw it

with Mike on this..most likely
just drove the hell out of it and hardly
(if ever) changed/re-filled the oil.

Knock the high spots off and toss in a new bearing ....
