The motor was just rebuilt and when I started it for the 1st time I had to really crank on the oil filter to get it to stop leaking. After changing the oil and filter, the new filter is still leaking after tightening it with the filter wrench. I checked where the filter screws onto and I don't see any nicks or gouges. What else am I missing? It is comming from the top of the oil filter.
Wix # 51515, this is what the parts guy gave me.
Dave

The plate that RR supplied me appeared to cure the problem. I swapped the one he sent me with mine and no more leaks. I looked at mine and could see no obvious difference between the 2. I even reused the filter and the old plate gasket. Go figure. Robert my cleaned up oil soaked floor thanks you very much. You be my new bestest buddy,
Dave
Stay tuned for parts identification quiz comming, Stuff I never tagged when I took it off 4 years ago thinking it would remember where it went. Yeah right!

What engine are you talking about ? If it is a smallblock, does it have the angled adapter, or straight ? You may have adapter gasket problems with either one .

Shouldn't need to tighten any more than hand tight. Something is wrong. There isn't an old gasket stuck to the filter mount?

Take care,

SB I'm assuming. Need to pull the nipple/plate & Felpro sells the large circular gasket seperate as opposed to the MP 3 piece blister pack & the FP one is slightly thicker/seals better. clean the block circular recess thoroughly & your plate may b warped but start w a good visual & go from there & I have one if you end up needing one

CHECK to see if there is an o-ring on the filter. I have heard of them missing. ALSO ..I had a Pennzoil filter that had a very shallow o-ring in it that needed to be super-tight.

x2 ...all they need is a medium hand-tight.

O ring or rubber seal? When you say o ring I am thinking small seal. Seal would be larger. Does wix have 2 seals?

It is a square O-ring that is near the outside edge of the filter. I have only seen a single seal/o-ring on any spin-on filter.

RapidRobert is right.

The seal under the filter mount plate may be bad. Take the plate off & replace the seal. When it leaks it looks like filter is leaking.

It is a 318. After the initial start up, I pulled the nipple off, but the plate wouldn't budge from the motor. I didn't know if it was suppose to come off so I didn't force it. Also, there was no gasket between the nipple and the plate. Is there suppose to be? I'll pull the filter and check again.

Yes it comes off & gently pry it w a screwdriver in the center at diff points around the perimeter which may bend it & it may already b bent but you have no choice. Correct, there is no gasket on the nipple. Send me your address & I'll get a plate out to you Monday if that'll work 4 you

It won't let me send you a PM Robert. Anyway, thanks for the assist. I'll take the plate and give that a try. I've got this filter on so tight, I'm hoping I can get it back off. Let me know on the cost with shipping.
Thanks,

Don't be surprised if some parts stores have no clue of how to find the gaskets, even the large outer one. Some places around here don't show a listing.

I thought about that. Another worry. I cross that bridge when I get the plate out and can take the plate and gasket up there so they can see exactly what I'm talking about.

Dave I'll grab the plate today/package it/send it out Monday. Just checked & yes my PM's are full/need to go thru them. When I reach 283 it gets (red) flagged, must b a chebby thing. The Felpro # is 70522 for the large circular single gasket

Even though many people praise WIX filters, a few years back they had a bad run where the screw-on threads were tapped wrong..
The filter would start but not thread on very easily/smoothly, I knew something was wrong so I ended up not using these as I didn't want to screw up the fitting on the oil pump. I did talk to the guys @ WIX and they tried giving me the sunshine treatment...
So I chucked the filters and switched brand. The next time I was @ Napa they confirmed that they had sent back many filters to WIX as they had a bad run..

Just my $0.02...
