I just got my new 383 running.Broke in the cam and now when i try to turn the idle down it will not drop below 1800rpm to 2000rpm with out stalling and blowing back through the carb. Then its hard to start back up and will only stay running above 1800.

sounds like your timings way retarded, turn the distributor a good amount advance and lock it down

Sounds like a possible bad vacuum leak.

check the coil side of the ballast. see if it has at least 9 volts.

What is your ignition set-up? I had a similar problem with my 440 source ready to run dist. I swapped in a stock points dist and it ran like stock.

I have the 440 source/pro comp distributor.Ive tried turning it to change timing but it doesnt matter where it is,still does same thing.Do I need to hook both wires to coil and key on power to power of coil.I have a MSD Blaster 2 coil.

I'm guessing you followed the directions give. Did you check the ballast yet? I had the same issue a few months ago. car would start up and run above 1500rpm as soon..and I mean as soon as I dropped the rpm it would shut off. Acted like it was running out of gas. I swapped ECM, Votage reg, cleaned the carbs. Long story short, the ballast went bad. Over to the shelf, new ballast and 2 minutes later problem solved.

I followed the directions that i got from pro-comp.Ground side from distributor to ground side of coil.Running a msd blaster 2 coil.12v direct to positive side of distributor.Resistor side of resistor to pos.side of coil.Pro comp said that the dist needed 12v with out a resistor. When it does shut off it coughs up through the carb, its like it just shuts off at lower than 1800 rpm.

Im pretty sure i dont have any, sprayed cleaner all over the place while it is running and got no change,it would have to be a pretty huge vacuum leak,at least thats what i thought too.

This is where I will agree wit hyou , the performer 750 is a piece of junk , but it's not the main reason behind his idle problem.

I thought with that CCJ ready to run you have to ditch the ballast resistor ?

What ignition box are you running?
If ProComp....
Chuck it in the trash, their distributor is OK (cloned after MSD) but the box is cheaply designed and not reliable. We just pulled one out of a friend's 65 Sat and put in an MSD starts/runs fine now..

Just my $0.02..

If you have access to one, try plopping in a stock dist and see if your troubles go away. That sounds just like what mine was doing.
