Need first hand help on what to run...
I want to drop in a hemi in my 65 coronet 2dr post for FUN nostalgia racing NOT weekly competitive, just a fast RELIABLE hemi super stock style clone. I really want to run around 10.50 ETs.
The car is now a 383 bracket car w/ roll bar, SS springs, and a few race goodies nothing special. Weighs 3750lbs.

With the hemi I am planning on a dana w/ 456 spool and beefy 727 ( $2500.- 3000. build) but I can't spend $20k on a motor.

I want the crossram and chrome valve covers look. But both the Mopar crate 426 465HP can buy as low as $12,995!. and 472 530 HP $15,995. come with single plane and I would have to spend another $2k or so. The Indy 572 770hp is $16,995 which is a killer motor BUT again the crossram upgrade is $3,450. and will not accept stock valve covers.
Is it a good idea to go with the 465 HP and add a better cam, still only around 500HP?
What motor do you run or recommend to get me 10.50s and keep the super stock crossram look AND a fun, reliable motor?? The car will NOT be for the street, but NOT an all out race car.

I called them yesterday for a quick question on spring pressure on a set of heads I spent alot of money on. The guy was such a jerk for a simple spring pressure question that I just said screw it and hung up.

At 3800lbs with 4.56, 727 4000 converter does 650hp sound about right to get me around 10.50 ETs?

Only problem you will have with BGR is running 10.50's.........









You will have to put a brick under the pedal to keep it out of the 9's...

For your purpose, you need something custom built, not chosen off a menu.

You want reliable, low maintenence, not too costly, 700 + horsepower.

If I was you, I would build a 540, 4.5 bore x 4.25 stroke, about 12.5 to 1 compression, with steel rods and all off the shelf parts, plus a flat tappet cam with about .650 lift, that is probably the cheapest short block you can build. Put your $$ into a really nice flowing set of heads.

Don't get too exotic with rods, rings and pistons, you don't need to spend the $ or deal with the maintenence. Roller cams are great for making power, but to run 10.50's you don't need it, and again it is a lot more $$ and maintenence to run a roller cam. If you keep the lift down in the .650 range, and the rpm reasonable, you won't need high dollar, high maintenence valve train parts, just use stock rockers with decent push rods and the motor will live for many years.
If you decide later you want to go 10.0's, just upgrade to a roller cam and better valve train and you'll be ready to go. Good luck! Joel
