That is a good point. Internal or external the pump needs a constant supply. Most internals pumps have a casing to keep fuel close to you dont' lose pressure. For mine it wasn't a problem until about 1/4 tenk and a long corner. My solution was to sump pump my tank for a number of reasons. No problem now with my external pump.

I had wanted to create a returnless adaptation. Use a local high presure circut with return to a reservoir, and supply the reservoir with some other low pressure like the original fuel pump with a float cut off. They may be systems that do a returnless system by now.
