How much spring pressure were you running? I don't think you have enough room to over spring it. Coil bind maybe? What pushrods were you running? I would be curious what the guide clearence was. Why did they not shut it off right away and pull a valve cover?
I seriously doubt all of this happened from to much valve spring pressure
